Description

Directs a range of student support services including mental health, case management, and sexual health. Develops and implements outreach and programing to increase campus awareness of the complex psychosocial needs of a diverse student population and available resources. Provides ongoing training and support for all faculty and staff regarding student outreach and support.

Job Duties

  • Provides leadership, supervision, direction, and support to SOS staff, which includes licensed mental health clinicians and social workers. Delegates tasks, provides feedback, resolves work problems, communicates job expectations, evaluates performance, and provides opportunities for professional development.  
  • Serves as a resource and primary liaison for the college community on issues of sexual health and mental health, which may include classroom presentations, curriculum and resource material development, committee membership, or staff and faculty presentations. 
  • Plans and implements student health programs to respond to identified needs and monitors existing programs for effectiveness and relevance through ongoing quality improvement and program review.  
  • Provides ongoing marketing and outreach to the campus community, including students, faculty, and staff, as a means of increasing awareness of resources and services and provides training on making appropriate interventions and referrals. 
  • Assist students who are in crisis, agitated, and facing personal dilemmas. Utilizes various techniques to de-escalate students and connect them with appropriate staff and resources.  
  • Maintains an understanding of Iowa licensing laws for LMSW, LISW, and LMHC and of professional ethics associated with these licensures.  
  • Works with faculty and staff to provide intervention strategies and appropriate resources for the complex biopsychosocial needs of a diverse student population.  
  • Consults with SOS staff on referrals on recommendations, as appropriate. 
  • Utilizes studentsâ?? non-cognitive and demographic data to develop tailored and targeted proactive outreach that addresses potential barriers to success.  
  • Collaborates with student conduct, residence life, and security, as needed, regarding conduct issues for students utilizing mental health services. Serves as a member of the Student Intervention Team.   
  • Conducts timely and comprehensive reviews of student support processes, procedures, and policies. Makes recommendations for changes to the Dean and implements such changes when appropriate.  
  • Ensures continuous quality improvement in programs, services, and resources, not only through the analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data, but also through research and review of best practices.  
  • Stays abreast of federal and state laws, rules and regulations that affect student services at the college, particularly as they relate to policies and procedures in Administrative Policy. 
  • Collaborates with Campus Life on programming events for students related to the functions of the SOS team.

Qualifications

Education:  

  • Mastersâ?? degree required 
Licensure
  • LMHC, LMSW, or LISW required 
Required:
  • Ability to pass a background check, have a valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Self-starter with the ability to perform with little or no direct supervision.
  • Regular, prompt & reliable attendance.
  • Ability to successfully and diplomatically work with co-workers to achieve common goals is critical. 
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills.  
  • Ability to balance the human relations, policies, and task aspects of the position.  
Preferred Skills: 
  • Conflict management techniques and ability to calmly and effectively communicate with upset students, parents, and stakeholders.  
  • Experience that demonstrates student-centered decision-making skills.
