A Brief Overview
The Respiratory Therapy Clinical Supervisor is a registered respiratory therapist who promotes/delivers quality care and maintains RT shift operational flow, in collaboration with the respiratory therapy manager. The RT Clinical Supervisor functions as a leader/clinical representative of the health care team by acting as a facilitator, coach, mentor and clinical/supervisory resource.

Essential Functions

  • Defines operational standards, organizes department-level activities to achieve optimum service delivery/systems/care/processes, setting high performance objectives for the department. Holds self and others accountable to meet stated objectives, outcomes, goals, timetables and commitments, adhering to standards even in the face of unforeseen circumstances.

    Perform a variety of supervisory functions on behalf of the respiratory therapy department

    • Ensure staff is providing good customer service according to departmental and company standards.
    • Demonstrates professional development and leadership related to the role and the roles direct/indirect impact within the RT department and hospital wide.
    • Ensure assigned staff is maintaining the standards of care and licensure requirements in a timely and accurate manner required by Childrens Hospital and Medical center.
      Personnel Management
    • Prioritizes and coordinates daily work activities. Provides leadership and guidance by sharing expertise with others. Approves schedules and monitors time worked.
    • Trains and/or oversees the training of employees on job related tasks.
    • Conducts employee performance management duties including completion and delivery of performance evaluations, setting goals, dissemination of information, coaching, addressing performance issues/routine correction actions, and recommending termination of employment.
    • Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations).
    • May participate in selection, hiring, and salary recommendations.

    Operational/Financial Management

    • Ensures cost effective use of resources by identifying and implementing changes related to staff allocation and assignment, and patient/department supplies.
    • Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety practices, policies and recordkeeping standards.
    • May assist with the development and maintenance of policies and procedures.
    • May participate in the implementation of business plans for the area.
    • May assist with annual budget by tracking expenses and providing input for future budget needs.
  • Lead and supervise assigned staff in performing respiratory therapy treatments
    • Set up and operate devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment.
    • Determine requirements for treatment, such as type, methods and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages, compatible with physicians orders.
    • Read physicians orders, measure arterial blood gases, and review patient information to assess patients condition.
    • Explain treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation and allay fears.
    • Monitor patients physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs, arterial blood gases and blood chemistry changes and consult with physician if adverse reactions occur.
    • Administer therapeutic gases including nitrogen, nitric oxide, heliox, etc.
    • Enforce safety rules and ensure careful adherence to physicians orders.
    • Maintain charts that contain patient pertinent identification and therapy information.
    • Inspect, clean, test, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently and notify manager/supervisor when repairs are necessary.
    • Educate patients and/or their families about the patients condition and teach appropriate disease management techniques such as breathing exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
    • Perform bronchopulmonary drainage and assist or instruct patients in performance of breathing exercises.
    • Conduct lung capacity tests to evaluate patients cardiopulmonary functions.
    • Provide emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
    • Complete all required respiratory therapy competency tests within specified timeline.
    • Demonstrate competency in identified technical skills for the respiratory department at the specific work area.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section.

Education Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited AMA approved school of respiratory care accredited by the National Board of Respiratory Care Required and
  • Bachelor's Degree from an AMA approved accredited school in respiratory care Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years experience as an RT including minimum of 3 years in pediatrics Required and
  • Minimum of 1 year supervisory experience Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess leadership skills including communication, organizational skills, time management, coping skills, motivation, problem-solving, autonomy, and supporting the team.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RCP - Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner Required and
  • CRT - Certified Respiratory Therapist Required and
  • RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist Required and
  • RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist Neonatal/Pediatric (RRT-NPS) Required and
  • Health Services\BCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Required and
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Required
