Stress in the workplace can greatly decrease productivity and efficiency. According to the Health and Safety Executive, throughout 2013 and 2014, there were 244,000 new cases of work-related stress, depression, and anxiety. Over the same length of time, 11.3 million working days were lost due to the same factors. That’s an average of 23 days missed per case of workplace stress. Obviously, that number is way too high!
Did you know that stress is known to cause ailments of the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive system (American Psychological Association)? In the fast-paced modern world, everyone has their own stress factors. That is why it is so important to not only make an honest effort to minimize workplace stress, but to implement prevention measures as well.
One way to reduce stress and enhance employee relationships is through team building exercises. Team building allows for the enhancement of relationships beyond office formality. Allowing employees to bond over fun activities and exercises can enhance the work environment.
Exercise is a great stress reducer! Health and wellness programs are becoming more and more common in the workplace. From webinars and seminars on wellness to offering in-house fitness classes and/or wellness program reimbursement, every company should consider developing wellness incentives.
