In our last post we started talking about why being a humble leader is so important. As we mentioned, great leaders are often required to take on a number of different roles and characteristics in order to truly have success and help their team succeed.
That being said, one characteristic that seems to be over looked quite often is a great leader’s ability to stay humble on a day-to-day basis.
On Tuesday, we gave you a few reasons why being a humble leader is so important. Today, we’ll give you a few pointers on how you can go about leading your team in a humble manner. Take a look below:
Look at things from their perspective. As a leader who has to manage the daily work of multiple people, it can definitely be hard to take a step back and view things from each individual’s perspective. However, taking the time to do so is an essential part of leading your team. Try taking a moment out of your day to evaluate your team’s actions from their perspective.
This is especially important when it comes to making mistakes; rather than immediately criticizing, give them the benefit of the doubt and think about why they might’ve taken that misstep. Not only will this make it much easier for you to approach them about how they can fix the situation, but it may also help you realize what you might’ve done wrong. As the leader, it’s always possible that you contributed to the problem, even if it is simply not being aware, and accepting your own mistakes is definitely a huge part of being humble.
Remember when you weren’t a leader. Most importantly, take a look back to your past and remember the time before you were a leader. Not all of us were born leaders, and almost all of us definitely didn’t start out as one at the very beginning of our career. Having this mindset will help keep you from criticizing others so harshly about their mistakes and allow for more constructive criticism because you realize that not so long ago you were probably in their shoes.
