Emotion Beyond Leadership: Caring in the Workplace

Last Friday, we talked about why showing some emotion is important to good leadership. But showing compassion isn’t just an important asset for leaders–it’s also an integral part of your overall workplace culture.

Since we’ve already given you the reasons why it’s important to show emotion within your leadership roles, today, we’re going to talk about why emotion is important among your employees and their co-workers (adapted from TLNT).

Compassion and forgiveness lead to creativity.

Being able to forgive someone for his or her mistakes is an important part of fostering creativity. Your peers are more likely to take up tasks or go beyond what is required of them when they know someone is there to help them pick up the pieces if things go awry.

We’re not saying you should haphazardly forgive your employees or co-workers for bad behavior, but if they’re trying to push the envelope in a way that helps the company and has very little damage in return, then they shouldn’t feel bad about their actions. If anything, it should give them the drive to push themselves harder next time.

Caring leads to support and collaboration.

Along with forgiveness, having compassion and care leads to support and collaboration. We talked about this briefly in our previous post, but it is such an important part of teamwork that it bears mentioning again.

Employees love to feel like “we’re in this together.” The result is the creation of a tight-knit group of likeminded individuals willing to put their heads together for a common goal. No one likes to feel like they’re in it alone. That kind of “dog-eat-dog world” mentality can really ruin a company.

If you see that a co-worker needs a little push or help on a project, go ahead and help them. The chance that they will return the favor is pretty high, and knowing that someone is there and has your back is a great feeling and an important aspect of teamwork.

Caring is an important part of leadership, but it is also just as important to have as a part of your company culture, as well. Whether you are a CEO, team leader, or a co-worker, having compassion for your peers will do a lot to benefit you and the company in the long run. Really, it’s a win-win situation.
