Job Description

The Enterprise Infrastructure Leader is responsible for developing and executing strategic direction and vision for Werner Enterprises technology infrastructure and ensuring capabilities align with and meet business objectives and goals. This role reports directly to the SVP & CIO and is a key member of the ITS Executive Leadership. The incumbent is responsible for leading ITS staff and service providers in the design, development and delivery of enterprise IT infrastructure including computer infrastructure, network/telecom services, systems engineering and operations management including data centers, terminal-based technology, in-cab solutions and end-user devices. The role works closely with all areas of ITS and the Information Security department to ensure compliance to information security and audit requirements, and plays a critical role in overall disaster recovery and business continuity efforts.

This role delivers executive guidance and direction to peers and staff members to manage ITS assets and ensure standards set by Werner Executive Leadership, the ITS Executive Steering Committee and ITS executive leadership are followed. The incumbent will ensure projects and services are properly managed and aligned with internal plans and business objectives support the overall strategy and priorities of the company.

The incumbent and related staff serve as solution architects for ITS and business groups, providing analysis and recommendations across all areas of enterprise infrastructure. The incumbent will work with business leaders, other ITS leaders and ITS staff to establish and maintain plans and technology road-maps that enhance worker productivity, improve customer experience, and advance business operations. The role works with enterprise and service architects, technology brokers, business partners, and external service providers to ensure new capabilities are incorporated into the ITS strategy and reflected in our long-term plans.

  • Project and Resource Planning: Review project plans to plan and coordinate project activity; develop and interpret organizational goals, policies, and procedures; develop computer information resources, providing for data security and control, strategic computing
  • Evaluate data processing proposals to assess project feasibility and requirements; control operational budget and expenditures; review and approve all systems charts and programs prior to their implementation and disaster recovery; evaluate the organizations technology use and needs and recommend improvements, such as hardware and software upgrades.
  • Technical Oversight: Consult with users, management, vendors, and technicians to assess computing needs and system requirements.  Stay abreast of advances in technology; meet with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors, and others, to solicit cooperation and resolve problems; provide users with technical support for computer problems; recruit, hire, train and supervise staff, or participate in staffing decisions.
  • Management: Prepare and review operational reports or project progress reports and purchase necessary equipment.
  • Provides thought leadership and insights into the changes and advances in technology related to the technology and shipping/terminal operations industry.
  • Acts as liaison between information technology services (ITS) and other functions in the organization.
  • Accountable for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of data center, terminal-based technology and in-cab/end-uers devices and related network, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction are maintained.
  • Monitors and analyzes problems that occur, ensuring that problems are identified and solved as rapidly and efficiently as possible using established practices and methodologies.
  • Leads migration to new technologies leveraging performance and reliability while balancing financial, physical and human resources needs to meet established objectives.
  • Manages business continuity and recovery of company's information systems, including needs analysis, design, plan implementation, and documentation.
  • Sets policies and procedures, technical standard and methods and priorities.
  • Provides thought leadership and implementation expertise in structuring implementation planning and post-implementation support efforts.
  • Designs, develops, and validates new IT strategies for infrastructure.
  • Leads formal IT performance sessions with business and IT leadership communicating portfolio status, service level metrics, benefits, delivered, and issues/risks.
  • Develops enterprise solutions that integrate across multiple processes and technologies.
  • Manages and coordinates vendor relationships to ensure SLAs are solid, adhered to and adjusted to meet the shifting business environment.
  • Manages vendors and service providers to ensure value and service are achieved and maintained through business partnerships.



  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Ten plus years of demonstrated experience in management and project planning, multi-department oversight, and progressive responsible information systems and technology
  • Broad knowledge of systems and technologies including but not limited to : Open Systems, i5/OS, Windows, networking systems and telephony, and SLAs.
  • Working knowledge of Sarbanes/Oxley concepts as this position will work closely with Internal Audit to ensure compliance.
  • Must also possess experience with High Availability/Disaster Recovery practices.
  • 10 to 15 years of IT and business/industry work experience in supply chain or logistics related field
  • Five plus years managing multiple, medium to large cross-functional teams or projects (including direct reporting relationships)
  • Technical and process expertise in the areas of data center management, server and storage management, database administration, disaster recovery/business continuity, virtualization, information security, voice and data network, user support, and other related services.
  • Strong project and team management skills with a proven ability to deliver IT projects on time and within budget.
  • Successful experience in collaborating and establishing credibility and building relationships with senior leadership and constituents.
  • Solid proficiency at defining, building, and supporting systems with 24x7 availability goals.
  • Expertise in strategic technology consolidation and virtualization leveraging external providers and business partners.
  • Demonstrates proactive abilities in implementing quality guidelines, standards and procedures.
  • Expertise in selecting and applying industry standards and/or frameworks (ITIL, COBIT, PMBOK, CMMI, ISO, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a changing environment with competing priorities.
  • Successful experience in building strong relationships and is sought out as a thought leader and mentor
  • Information Security certifications or experience
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification desired
  • Masters in Business Administration or related field
