A Brief Summary of This Position:

This position is an individual contributor responsible for structural analysis and design of products to be quoted and fabricated by the Valmont Utility Division, Steel Group, primarily of Utility transmission and distribution structures.  Included in this is the full design responsibility for processing specific quotes and orders, general design engineering support for drafting and sales, and providing guidance and training for Associate and Design Engineers. 

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the Engineering Manager and has no direct or indirect reports
  • Analyze and design products by Finite Element Method (IMPAX design program) and other structural design software taking into consideration both public safety, manufacturability, and minimum cost (balancing competitiveness and profitability)
  • Interpret customer specifications, customer needs, and market/sales needs
  • Communicate engineering data to the customer and others.  The latter includes itemizing cost-related requirements of a quotation, including weights, reviewing engineering drawings and shop drawings, and evaluating as-built product.  Support the presentations of steel poles and Valmont Utility in Sales presentations and any Alliance Account meetings
  • Direct efforts of the Drafting Group to assure that project requirements have been properly detailed and that order processing proceeds smoothly and rapidly
  • Interrelationships and communications will promote a professional attitude towards the work and the office environment
  • Recommend changes in design criteria, analysis methods, drafting procedures, and developing new methods and procedures when appropriate
  • Recommend testing to confirm theoretical designs when necessary; including the planning and coordination of the testing
  • Communicate information about new ideas, product and system improvements, etc. to encourage increased morale and efficiency throughout the company and to enhance Valmont Utilityâ??s image as the leader in our industry
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds

Other Important Details about the Role:

The incumbent independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria in performing this job and devises new approaches to problems encountered.  The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work usually results from progressive experience in structural design and in the product line.  Assignments have clear and specified objectives, but require the investigation of a number of variables. General direction of Senior Design, Design and/or Associate Drafters and Associate and/or Design Engineers may be included.

The products within the scope of this position are fabricated steel structures used for the support of electric power transmission and distribution lines.  Complex structures requiring special modeling techniques are included but may require some support.  Familiarity with the design requirements of other product lines may be required.

The work primarily includes interpretation of customer specifications and the subsequent design and/or analysis of structures to meet those specifications, in conjunction with applicable national, technical society, industry and Valmont codes and specifications.  The incumbent provides continuity of this function from the quotation to the order processing stages.  This involves some direction of the design and drafting process, selective drawing approval, and significant interrelationship with other departments within Valmont Utility and customers, consultants, contractors, and agents outside of Valmont Utility.

The incumbent provides the technical support in customer contacts on quotations and orders.  Routinely, effective customer contact by telephone, letter, and email or in person is required.  Technical support, communication, and assistance is also required to other Valmont Utility engineering office locations for Divisional support and goals.  The work also includes providing assistance to the Engineering Services group (IMPAX and CATO program group in the ESS Division) in the development and enhancement of design and analysis programs.

The incumbent receives instructions on specific assignment objectives, any complex features and their possible solutions.  Assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgement.  Project assignments may require a limited amount of new and unique technical application.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelorâ??s degree in engineering with 5+ years preferred relevant experience
  • Technical competence in Structural Engineering
  • Engineer-in-Training Certification
  • Working knowledge of computer-aided design
  • Experience with Auto CAD and PLS Pole

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Masterâ??s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Seven (7) years of related engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • A solid understanding of the end use of the product and the nature of design loads and their development
  • Understanding of welding procedures, processes and quality assurance requirements and methods for structural product
  • Experience with industry design standards and codes
  • Prior experience designing steel monopoles or industrial utility structures
  • Prior project team experience

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  It is not anticipated that travel will be required with this position.  Any travel will be at the discretion of the Engineer and the Engineering Manager.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
