How you will contribute
Valmont is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for the Lead Person position in the Small Parts & Mast Arms Departments. We are looking for a highly driven individual that will, while working under the direct supervision of the Production Supervisor, direct all activities regarding assembly and manufacturing processes in the Small Parts Departments. This is done within prescribed codes, and according to prescribed procedures, specifications, and drawings. Additionally, you will...

  • Communicate effectively with your supervisor & your shift regarding workload, problems or issues on the shift, safety items, maintenance issues, goals and progress with respect to the goals, results of prior day, etc.
  • Be responsible for making sure all employees maintain proper PPE on the shop floor and follow workloads accordingly.
  • Be knowledgeable of shop goals and keep them posted for your department; keep your team on track with these goals
  • Enforce company policies and procedures
  • Use GMAW and FCAW process to tack weld various small parts for the welder to weld. The assembly consist of base plate, hand hole, arm mounting simplex, tenon top, and/or other small parts.
  • Uses jib crane for lifting various components, such as base plate and arm mounting simplex, into position for assembly. Frequently pushes, lifts, and pulls up to 50 pounds.
  • Read and interprets drawings to determine parts needed to assemble pole assembly. Locate and gather parts needed for assembly, from parts staging area, that are staged by the Storeroom personnel.
  • Read and interpret drawings to ensure proper location of various small part attachments.
  • Use plasma torch and oxy-fuel torch to cut steel. Uses jigs made at Valmont for cutting holes in shafts for inserting hand hole rims, arm mounting simplex's, couplings, and other small parts.
  • Wear protective goggles or hood to protect eyes from harmful rays.
  • Use measuring tape, levels, squares, and angle finders to measure distances and angles. Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides feet, inches, fractions, and decimals. Uses table to convert fractions to decimals, and decimals to fractions.
  • Use motorized grinders, motorized buffers, stone grinders, and drills to help assemble.
  • Use overhead cranes, straddle truck, and fork truck to move product in and out of the shop.
  • Update load and WIP reports to maintain accurate records and load list. Ensure the product is coming into the shop in the correct order as required.
  • Operational knowledge of the shop equipment.
  • Perform machine setups on all machines, for all parts to be produced
  • Make minor adjustment to all machines/ setting of speed, volts, amps, tooling, and hydraulic pressures to obtain desired results
  • Work with department dispatcher to prioritize workloads to achieve acceptable fill rates
  • Inspect parts during and after fabrication to assure that quality is acceptable
  • Perform daily department walk through with lead and or other Utility personnel
  • Assist/leads the training of all personal
  • Report immediately any matters requiring maintenance attention; initiate Maintenance Work Request
  • Assist maintenance personnel on any repairs required
  • Communicate with all Operators to assist them with any help he/she can provide
  • Maintain safe work habits, and takes immediate action to correct any unsafe condition that might occur
  • Housekeeping duties as required

What it takes  
Required Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read and write clearly
  • Strong applied manufacturing mathematical skills
  • Must pass GMAW/FCAW weld test and maintain certification
  • The ability to work assigned schedule to include overtime and weekends when required for business needs
  • Experience with safely operating a forklift in a professional environment
  • A strong working knowledge of precision measurement with a tape measure
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Working knowledge of Valmont's Manufacturing process

Highly qualified candidates will also possess:

  • Associate's degree with coursework in Industrial Manufacturing or related field
  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Initiative to resolve issues in a timely manner
  • 2 years of supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing specific role
  • 2 years previous experience working in an assembly environment
  • 2 years previous experience working in a manufacturing or fabrication environment
  • The ability to accurately and honestly check one's own work for quality assurance
  • Training in Lean Manufacturing processes
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
