As part of a global team of Release Managers, the Release Manager is responsible for planning and coordinating the deployment of high priority releases into the global client environment meeting agreed timescales and required quality levels using a Project Management approach. 

The Release Manager will deliver successful deployment projects through appropriate planning, progress monitoring and reporting.  The Release Manager also acts as the main point of contact throughout the lifecycle of the deployment and clear and effective channelling of communication to all stakeholders through a variety of forums is a key requirement to ensuring successful delivery of Release Management projects. 

The Release Manager is also responsible for the planning and coordination of regular Operating System patching and security updates.

Position Summary:

  • Effective management of varying software deployments into our global client environment by adopting a Project/Programme Management approach to Release Management activities
  • Lead and coordinate subject matter experts from both the Operations and Infrastructure Engineering teams on Release Management projects.  Includes gathering requirements, defining deliverables and ensuring all outputs and interfaces to Release Management projects are correct
  • Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders through meetings, conference calls and project status update reports
  • Weekly engagement with the Release Execution teams to ensure successful execution of all change of new deployments to global client base
  • Develop the project delivery schedule, which includes identification and logical sequencing of activities needed to complete deliverables and to identify critical path when required
  • Create internal and customer facing supporting documentation for Release Management activities and projects.  Peer review customer facing documentation for other team members
  • Protect the live environment through strict but pragmatic implementation and enforcement of the Release and Change Management processes through creation, ownership and execution assignment of change ticket
  • Represent Release Management at CAB meetings when required
  • Personal responsibility for maintaining correct change record status throughout the Release cycle, ensuring a thorough post implementation review is conducted
  • Monitor the quality of technical work through reviews with relevant technical teams
  • Manage process compliance and contribute to team process improvement activities by maintaining, regularly reviewing and adding to the body of Release Management supporting documentation and toolset
  • Inform management and colleagues of progress on projects by providing periodic progress reports on the performance of the project against the agreed deliverables. Escalate issues and risks as appropriate to Senior Management
  • Work with Clients to define and agree OS patching requirements in support of the Standard and Advanced Patching service. This will include on-boarding clients for Standard/Advanced patch management, defining regular and recurring schedules, understanding key dependencies, providing guidance and expertise in the delivery and on-going management of this service
  • Manage all incoming ad hoc requests for OS patches, security updates and core agent upgrades as part of the request fulfilment process
  • Work with the client to understand key dependencies and to define and agree a schedule for all service impacting maintenance following OS patch, security update and core agent upgrade requests
  • Understand the impact of maintenance at a Platform and Network level on Production environments
  • Working knowledge of deployment toolsets and OS patching technologies e.g. HPSA, HPNA, RHN, WSUS

Minimum Requirements:

  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Proven project coordination skills in a technical environment
  • Proven customer facing experience
  • Good knowledge of MS Office
  • Managed hosting/IT Operations experience at an Enterprise level, preferably with global exposure
  • Experience of Change and Release Management procedures and procedures
  • Self-Starter with good personal initiative
  • Experience of leading effective meetings to reach objectives and goals
  • ITILv3 Foundation Certified

Preferred Requirements

  • ITILv3 Intermediate e.g. Release, Control and Validation
  • Basic knowledge of Windows/ Linux/Solaris/ESX operating environments
  • Exposure and hands on experience with Agile
  • Experience using Server Management architecture tools to deploy pre-defined updates WSUS/HPSA/HPNA
  • Experience of working in a global team across multiple regions (North America, APAC, EMEA)

  • Adherence to change process and targets as determined by Global Change Management including but not limited to:
    • Meeting Approval status >48 hrs prior to scheduled execution
    • Zero ˜missed' changes due to incorrect scheduling
    • <5% CAB rejection due to incorrect process, incorrect MOP (Method Of Procedure) or any other non-adherence to process
  • Proficiency in the use of Release Management tools
  • Use or available resources to achieve the best results possible, delegate responsibility and ownership where appropriate
  • Timely, correct decision making based on facts
  • Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders in all project situations
  • Deal effectively with customers, senior management, engineers, contractors (or 3rd party suppliers) and other project stakeholders ensuring that you get the best out of them for your projects
  • Control projects; deliver them on time and to the requisite quality standards
  • Achieve customer NetPromoter scores of 8+
  • Deal effectively with failure; demonstrate an ability to learn from mistakes
