Job Title:  Retirement Technician


Position Tenure:  Term Limited position ending December 31, 2024


Special Note: This is a term-limited position expected to end December 31, 2024.  Pursuant to LB 147(2021), the administration of the Omaha School Employees Retirement System (OSERS) pension plan will transition to the state retirement system in 2024.  The incumbent of this position may apply for other positions within Omaha Public Schools in 2024.


Location: Retirement Office, Teacher and Administrative Center (TAC), 3215 Cuming Street, Omaha, NE 68131


Reports To: Chief Financial Officer


Work Schedule/FLSA Status:  261 duty days/Exempt


Position Purpose:  Provide retirement estimate calculations to OSERS members (both active and inactive).  Interact with members of OSERS to discuss retirement options.  Interact with retired members of OSERS to assist with questions.  Clear and concise written and oral communication is necessary. 


Essential Performance Responsibilities

  1. Interprets and applies state and federal retirement laws, OSERS rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.  Explain services, procedures, options, and benefits to plan members and beneficiaries.
  2. Examines benefit applications for compliance with internal procedures and verifies salary and service information of members to determine retirement benefit eligibility, per all governing statutes, rules and regulations, and policies.
  3. Conducts research to review and analyze retirement plan member records from multiple data systems. Includes records of payroll, vital statistics, legal contracts, and court documents.
  4. Processes applications for retirement and survivor benefits by evaluating and calculating estimates under applicable statutes. Includes Optional Service Credit (refunded service, out of state service, leave of absence, and purchase of service).  Reviews/audits the work of co-workers.
  5. Calculates Military Service; prepares Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, by splitting accounts and calculating estimates for the member and the alternate payee; and prepares necessary information for Board review on applicants seeking Disability retirement.
  6. Participates in software and data transition projects.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer as designated by the Board of Education or Superintendent.


Equipment:  This position may require the ability to use  basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, fax machine, and 10-key calculator.  Must always comply with OPS's guidelines for equipment use.


Travel:  Limited travel may be required. (Example: meetings in Lincoln, NE)

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to file and retrieve materials.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.



  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors and the general public
  • Will be working under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer in order to complete day to day tasks
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service


Employee Punctuality and Appearance

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelors degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Accounting or Business, preferred or equivalent work experience demonstrating ability to comprehend described skill set .
  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel and MS Access.
  • Previous database experience, preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Exceptional aptitude for numbers and detail.
  • Exceptional aptitude for understanding architecture and relational database integration, preferred.
  • Skill in organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication.


Terms of Employment

This position is treated as a full-time exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.


The offer of employment is contingent upon:


  • Obtaining and providing verification of all licenses, certificates, and other requirements for the position (e.g., Paraprofessionals obtaining œHighly Qualified status, etc.), as identified and maintaining all licenses, certificates, and requirements for your position throughout employment.
  • A background check which demonstrates to OPS that background is acceptable for the position.
  • Verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination to determine ability to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
