Job Title:  Machinist

 

Location:  Service Center, 4041 N. 72nd Street, Omaha, NE 68134

 

Reports To:  Supervisor of Maintenance

 

Work Schedule/FLSA Status:  261 Duty Days/ Non-Exempt

 

Salary Schedule: This is a full-time negotiated position. Salary grade: 50B

 

Position Purpose:  Repairs wide range of equipment with metal assemblies, both portable and stationary.  Repairs routinely involve cutting, welding, grinding and fabrication of parts from metal stock through the operation of saw, shaper, drill press, lathes and punch.  Examples of portable equipment are chairs, tables, carts, vocational education equipment; stationary examples are air handlers, and belt and pulley sets.

 

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Ability to make or repair a wide variety of parts utilizing maintenance equipment or from an existing part of a shop drawing and prints.
  • Mechanical aptitude and skill needed to design and fabricate equipment for unique or specified functions.
  • Demonstrate ability to repair equipment such as pumps, air handlers, gearboxes, seals, bearings, furniture and vocational shop equipment.
  • Ability to measure machine tolerance to within 0.0005 inches utilizing mills and lathes, and to cut threads utilizing single point tooling.
  • Ability to weld steel, aluminum and cast iron, using stick, MIG and TIG in all positions.
  • Employee frequently works with little or no supervision and thus must make rational decisions on manner job is accomplished, solve problems and establish
  • Small scale job planning is routine. Must determine scope of work; planning and requisitioning materials, phasing necessary for job accomplishment; doing the work and completion of functions.
  • Most jobs are non-standard and the level of quality and quantity is that expected for a journeyman in the craft.

 Additional Duties:

 

Performs other related tasks as assigned by manager, foreman, and/or administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

 

Equipment:  Must always comply with OPS’s guidelines for equipment use.

 

Travel:  Local travel will be required.

 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

 

  • Ability to lift items weighing a minimum of 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet.
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding with tools and equipment weighing a minimum of 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work in physically restricted areas.
  • Ability to pass a pulmonary function test.
  • Ability to pass functional assessment of physical abilities.

Interrelations:

  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks.
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

  • In order for schools and departments to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.

  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.

  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •  Minimum of five years of full-time journeyman-level experience required.

  • Background in plant maintenance, or a broad-based background focused upon equipment repairs is preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.

  • Knowledge of computer system and various software; including but not limited to Microsoft Office software, work order systems and AutoCadd or the like.

  • High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required.

  • Must meet the insurability requirements of the school district’s carrier.

Terms of Employment:


This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.

  • Obtaining and providing verification of all licenses, certificates, and other requirements for the position (e.g., Paraprofessionals obtaining “Highly Qualified status,” etc.), as identified and maintaining all licenses, certificates, and requirements for your position throughout employment.
  • A background check which demonstrates to OPS that background is acceptable for the position.
  • Verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination to determine ability to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
