Omaha Public Power District is seeking a Lead Physical Substation Engineer that has a passion for engineering design and construction as well as working with a dynamic team that consistently seeks continuous improvement, collaboration and technology.  This role will provide opportunities to participate in projects from concept to energization presenting design, development, field, networking and growth opportunities.  

As a Lead, you are an individual technical contributor, mentor to others and an assistant to the Manager in managing the work, training, and performance of the Substation Engineering team in support of engineering design, specifications, drawings, work packages and operational support for the construction and modification of the District's electric substations.  Project deliverables offer purpose, inspiration, and ownership as they literally energize our neighborhood and communities.

Performance is measured by the safety, reliability, operability, regulatory compliance, project performance and department team engagement. 

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Provide and coordinate substation engineering efforts.

  • Accountable for safety, reliability, operability, timely completion and budget of assigned projects.
  • Participate in engineering, planning, estimating, design, drafting, analysis, permitting, specification development, contracts, work orders, and close-out activities.
  • Provide critical support for generation station transformers and related high voltage equipment.
  • Maintain effective relationships with corporate personnel, consultants, equipment vendors, and contractors to ensure project integration and marketplace.
  • Coordinate substation design efforts with collocated neighboring utilities or customer utilities to provide for integrated and reliable substation designs.
  • Identify project risk, potential contingencies, and align resources to meet requirements.

Assist manager with the day-to-day coaching, feedback, reporting, performance evaluation and assignment of work.

  • Lead, support and provide technical direction and task assignments for the engineering, procurement, construction, contract administration, construction management, and record management of assigned projects to ensure completion within budget, schedules, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead, support, prepare and review the writing of material specifications, material contracts, outside service contracts, construction inspection and any related contract management for assigned projects.
  • In the absence of management, evaluate workloads and priorities and assign appropriate resources to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of departmental products and services.




  • ABET accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Nebraska or means for reciprocity within six months.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of equivalent engineering work experience. A Master's degree may be considered for up to two (2) years of experience.
  • A valid driver's license is required.


  • Familiarity and experience with Ventyx (Asset Suite), Cognos, AutoDesk (CAD, Inventor, Vault), Spatial Business Systems (Substation Design Suite) Bentley MicroStation, RISA, and PeopleSoft.
  • Understanding and application of ASTM, NESC, OSHA, ASCE, IEEE, etc. as it applies to Substation design and construction methods
