OPPDs Substation and System Protection department is looking for a Helper or Apprentice Relay Specialist to join their team!

This position is responsible for performing complex maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, repair and installation of protective relaying, control and automation systems associated with the District's generating, transmission and distribution systems.

Specific responsibilities for the role include:

  • Install, maintain, test, troubleshoot and repair protective relays, control equipment and associated devices under the direct supervision of a Senior or 1st Class Relay Specialist.
  • Assist with reviewing prints and records to prepare cutover procedures on new installation or revisions to existing protection and control schemes to ensure the integrity of the protection and supervisory control system.
  • Assist in preparing, conducting, and evaluating comprehensive cutover, functional and test procedures on the protection and supervisory control system and associated devices.  Interpret the results of test procedures.
  • Troubleshoot, analyze and determine the cause of anomalies within protection and supervisory control schemes.  Initiate corrective action as necessary.
  • Perform all assigned construction, operation, testing and maintenance tasks in accordance with the District's Safety Manual, the Hold Order System, and the Personal Protective Grounding Manual, standards and practices.

Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Requires two years of formal education in electronics and/or electrical theory or equivalent knowledge and experience. 
  • Must have a basic knowledge of the protection and supervisory control systems. 
  • Must be able to use a wide range of technically sophisticated test equipment. 
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to new technology, especially in the areas of personal computer hardware, software and substation automation equipment. 
  • Must communicate openly, be personally accountable, be customer oriented, and be respectful in interaction all with the expectation that you will progress to Senior Relay Specialist. 
  • Must be dependable, accurate, and exercise excellent judgment due to the critical nature of the protection and supervisory control system. 
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be available for overtime.
  • Must be willing to report directly to job site or Elkhorn facility.  
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain NERC/CIP access.
  • Candidate will be required to complete the system protection apprenticeship program
  • Required to reside within a 35-mile radius of the Substation & System Protection office at Elkhorn.

Closing Statement

 

This position is commensurate on experience.

Hourly Starting Pay Step 1: 

Helper $29.37   

Apprentice Relay Specialist $36.23
