Location: Elkhorn Service Center, Elkhorn, NE

Duration:  First-Term: May 2021  December 2021

                 Second-Term: May 2022 - August 2022

Work Schedule: 8:00am 4:30pm, M-F, Flexible Work Arrangement Available

Pay: $21.69


Substation Engineering's co-op program is designed to provide the student the opportunity to complete assignments with hands-on and in-depth experiences of electric utility substation environment.  The individual will gain understanding of equipment (transformers, arresters, breakers, switches, batteries, etc.) along with various design schematics, regulatory requirements, professional industry standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC, etc.) as it relates to project design, material procurement, constructability, acceptance testing and commissioning, to energization.  Experience will also include material procurement, contract preparation, substation site visits and other aspects from project execution to close-out.  Student will work in an engineering office environment with civil, structural and electrical engineers along with CADD operators resulting in exposures across various disciplines and environments.


Prior coop projects have included battery sizing, equipment (RTU, breaker, relaying) design and wiring, erosion correction, foundation design, environmental reviews (SPCC, BMP, SWPPP),  software analysis, and contract development and bid review.





Specific fields of study required:  Engineering (Civil or Electrical) 


  • 2.5 GPA required; 3.0 GPA or higher preferred
  • Junior Status or Higher
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Current full-time student attending an accredited college/university



  • Must have the ability to:
    • Prioritize and work on multiple assignments at one time
    • Work under stressful situations
    • Operate a computer and other office equipment
    • Sit at a desk for more than one hour at a time
    • Move about the Company and interact with all levels of the Company 
    • Ability to think logically, communicate clearly and offer informed suggestions to improve processes. 
  • High Analytical and Problem Solving Skills, Attention to Detail, Good Communication Skills (Written and Oral), Organized, High degree of innovation and creativity, and continuous improvement mindset. 
  • Ability to read prints
  • Team Oriented

Technical Ability (i.e. software): Microsoft Office Suite of Products, Familiarity with AutoCAD tools, Ability to read and understand technical drawings and documents
