The Labor Relations Specialist will administer the corporate labor relations function to ensure effective development and interpretation of the collective bargaining agreements. The Labor Relations Specialist will interface with labor and management representatives to facilitate productive and cooperative labor/management relations. The Labor Relations Specialist will also investigate, prepare and present grievances and formal appeals through all steps of the grievance process and protect the company from liability under federal, state, and local anti-discrimination statutes by effectively managing the investigation and resolution of employees' internal EEO complaints and government agency charges.

  1. Responsible for representing management in the grievance and labor/management process and contribute to proper resolution of disputes, and to contribute to the maintenance of mutual trust and respect in labor/management relations. 
    • Attending grievance and labor/management meetings and developing appropriate responses and other correspondence to the Unions at the request of Management. 
    • Assist in the coordination of the Company's arbitration and/or legal filings and cases.
    • Responsible for providing consistent contract or policy interpretations to representatives of Management, employees and the Unions when questions arise.
  2. Participates in the collective bargaining process during labor contract negotiations and serves as a member of the negotiating team.
    • Preparation of schedules, correspondence and comparative wage, benefit, work rule and economic research information.
    • Responsible for the coordination of all negotiated changes to the Agreements including the implementation of any General Wage Increase, coordination of wage upgrades and reclassifications, preparation of the Amendments to the Agreements for Management and Union approval, coordination of reprinting of the contract books and Wage Rate Sheets, and the preparation of written communication to Management detailing all negotiated changes to the Agreements.
  3. Responsible for the investigation of internal and external charges of discrimination/harassment and other complaints. For external charges, this includes the preparation of the Company's statement of position, the compilation of additional information relevant to the charge, and the arrangement of on-site reviews and/or fact-finding conferences.
  4. Participate, and potentially lead, cross-functional initiatives/projects both within Human Capital and between different Business Units as assigned by the Director Labor Relations and/or Vice President Human Capital.  Such projects shall include, but are not limited to, organization and administration of the Company's corporate policies through the Policy Oversight Committee, supervision and coordination of training on conflicts of interest, and facilitation and reviews of code of ethics matters with the Ethics and Compliance Oversight Committee.
  5. Assist, as needed, on Human Capital compliance and auditing duties that include monitoring, analysis, identification of issues, and reviews of any regulatory filings.
  6. Actively coordinates and participates with other employees, including Human Capital Business Partners, on investigations, recommendations, and implementation of potential disciplinary actions.  Such participation may including conducting interviews, assisting in completions of investigation reports, presenting recommendations for disciplinary actions against employees, writing disciplinary letters, and coordinating tasks to implement such disciplines.




  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Human Resources or a related field or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge of working in Union environment, progressive discipline process and employment laws and regulations. 
  • Thorough knowledge of Human Resources practices and procedures, especially Labor Relations, and regulations pertaining to Equal Employment Opportunity and Fitness for Duty. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong analytical capabilities and judgment and must be able to effectively interact with management, employees, medical and legal counsel and regulatory agencies. 
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws and the legal system; previous advocacy, legal or arbitration experience helpful. 
  • Excellent listening and conflict resolution skills as well as being proficient in presentation and strong communication skills.


  • Previous labor relations or legal experience highly desired. 
  • PHR or SPHR Certification helpful.
