Responsibilities

 

Salary commensurate with experience.

The Protection Engineer provides protection, automation, and control (PAC) system design application engineering and operational support engineering for the Districts generation, transmission and distribution facilities, and for interties with other utilities and with customer owned energy source facilities to ensure adequate and reliable protection, automation, and control.  Provides Intertie Meter (IM) system design application engineering and operational support engineering for the Districts generation and transmission facilities to ensure adequate and reliable intertie metering.

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  1. Provide design application engineering and operational support engineering for PAC systems to ensure the adequate and reliable protection, automation and control of the Districts generation, transmission and distribution facilities and of interties with other utilities and customer owned energy source facilities.
  2. Review protective relay operations and analyze system outages and disturbances to ensure continuous and reliable system performance.  Resolve operational control problems on the Districts generation, transmission, distribution, and customer owned energy source facilities caused by short circuits or other disturbances.
  3. Provide PAC engineering for distributed resource interconnection and support District generation capacity addition/upgrade projects.
  4. Provide Intertie Meter (IM) system design application engineering and operational support engineering for the Districts generation (plant interties) and transmission facilities (at transmission voltage levels) to ensure adequate and reliable intertie metering.
  5. Support the Department's mission in areas of Regulatory Compliance.
  6. Keep abreast of the latest technological advances to ensure that PAC systems and IM systems meet the Districts needs.

Qualifications

 

Required:

  •  Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Valid driver's license. 

Desired:

  • Co-op, internship, or other relevant program experience.
  • Protection and/or automation engineering experience related to substation, transmission, or distribution systems.
  • Electric Utility engineer experience in areas of protection and/or automation.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal) with co-workers, vendors, and customers (internal and external).
  • Self-starting and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ownership and accountability to provide timely, accurate results and openness to improvement and change.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, or registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Nebraska or ability to obtain Nebraska registration within 6 months through reciprocity.
