Histotechnologist

Position Highlights:

Nebraska Medicine is now taking applications for a talented individual to join us as a Histotechnologist. This role will be great for someone that has a passion for pathology and great customer service for our patients we serve. This specific position will work from the Nebraska Medicine main campus in Omaha, NE.

The Histotechnologist has direct responsibilities for the technical operations of a laboratory or laboratory section. This includes acting as technical resource, performing a wide variety of complex diagnostic procedures and directing workflow to ensure the accurate, efficient and most cost effective provision of testing. This position is also a primary resource for compliance, regulatory and quality assurance activities.

  • Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of assigned laboratory(s)/section(s) and participates in planning and financial management as appropriate.

  • Partners with key stakeholders to ensure appropriate quality and performance measures are in place to meet any policy, compliance or regulatory requirements.

  • Coordinates the preparation of the lab section for inspection by accrediting agencies.

  • Orients individuals in laboratory operations including routine and complex testing methodology, instrumentation and information systems, documenting progress, developing learning plans and providing feedback to both employee and leader.

  • Acts as resource for laboratory information systems functions coordinating change and implementation requests as needed.

Shift:

  • Full Time and benefits eligible (1.0 FTE / 40 hours per week)

  • First Shift, Mon-Fri.

  • Some weekends / some on-call responsibilities

Process and prepare patient tissue for histological or immunohistological analysis according to department procedures using a wide range and depth of technical knowledge. Perform histological or immunohistological techniques, histochemical and/or immunohistochemical and enzyme histochemical and/or immunohistochemical reactions with minimal supervision. Support continuous improvement of the anatomical pathology laboratory services of the organization to ensure high quality and timely pathology preparations for a quality diagnosis.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years' experience with histopathological and/or immuno histological processes as a Histo technician (HT) ASCP, OR Histotechnologist (HTL) ASCP or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) ASCP or equivalent (i.e. Medical Technologist (MT) ASCP or Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) NCA prior to 2004, or have previously qualified as a technologist under 42 CFR.1433 published 3/14/90 [55 FR 9538] on or before 2/28/92) required.

  • High school education or equivalent required.

  • Education and training equivalent to 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either 24 semester hours of science courses that include i) 6 semester hours of chemistry ii) 6 semester hours of biology iii) 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination (One year of related experience equals one year of education) required.

  • Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) ASCP, OR Histotechnologist (HTL) ASCP or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) ASCP or equivalent (i.e. Medical Technologist (MT) ASCP or Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) NCA prior to 2004, or have previously qualified as a technologist under 42 CFR.1433 published 3/14/90 [55 FR 9538] on or before 2/28/92) OR 12 years of experience with histopathological processes and tissue recognition required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified HT(ASCP) QIHC preferred.

  • Experience in immunohistochemistry is preferred.

  • Bachelor of science or successful completion of a formally recognized histology technique training program preferred.

  • Knowledge of paraffin embedded tissue, frozen tissue, and immunohistochemistry preferred.
