Inpatient Coding Sr Associate

Job Description

Review hospital inpatient clinical documentation and assign correct diagnosis and procedure codes to ensure accurate clinical information and reimbursement for the organization. Work closely with clinical quality areas to review requests as it relates to organizational quality reporting data. Analyze to facilitate appropriate Diagnosis Related Group (DRG), Severity of Illness, Risk of Mortality, appropriate POA indicators and Hospital Acquired Conditions.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school education or equivalent required.
  • Complete accredited course work for coding certificate with current credentialing as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H) or completion of an American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accredited Health Information Management (HIM) program with current credentialing as an RHIT/ RHIA required.
  • Minimum of three years post-secondary education with coursework in business, medical assistant program or nursing assistant program OR equivalent combination of education/experience in coding (one year of education equals one year of experience) required.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities to identify and comprehend opportunities for coding and documentation improvement through observation, data analysis and interpretation required.
  • Knowledge in PC based applications, specifically an encoder required.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain working relationships in department and hospital to foster a team environment required.
  • Must be a self-starter, exercise independent problem solving skills and manage job priorities in a self-directed manner required.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Diagnosis and Procedure coding, Diagnosis Related Group (DRG), Severity of Illness (SOI), Present on Admission (POA), Risk of Mortality (ROM) and Hospital Acquired Condition (HAC) required.
  • Knowledge of coding guidelines required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior coding experience preferred.
  • Experience coding in an acute care facility preferred.
  • Inpatient facility coding experience preferred.
  • Completion of an AHIMA accredited HIM program with current credentialing as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) OR Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.
  • Knowledge of state/federal rules and regulations pertaining to healthcare coding preferred.
  • Knowledge of inpatient coding query process preferred.
