Job Requirements
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Experience
Minimum 3 years phlebotomy experience or American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) eligible course and 1 year of phlebotomy experience required.
License/Certifications
American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification required within 18 months of date of hire to maintain employment.
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT) preferred.

Essential Job Functions
Essential Functions I
Performs all duties of Phlebotomist 1, II, III and IV to assist in the daily workload by performing assigned tasks.
Assists in daily workload.
Compliant per PPE guidelines.
Performs arterial blood gas collection, bone marrow assists, specimen processing, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specimen collection, and port accessing and de-accessing.
Is a complete reference point for all staff members on the performance of all routine and complex phlebotomy procedures.
Review operations and work performed in the section; identify problems, and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
Assists in training new and existing staff, including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skill/ training checklists.
Communicates process/procedural changes in a timely manner and educate staff on the need for the change.
Distributes proficiency tests to staff. Reviews and submits proficiency test results.
In the absence of the Service Leader, responsible for the operation of the Phlebotomy Department.
Identify problems and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary with the Phlebotomy Service Leader or designee to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
Accommodate patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
Identifies staff performance issues. Initiates immediate follow-up as required. Provides documentation of issues to Service Leader.
Organizational and department competencies are completed 100% of the time.
Maintains compliance with establisher processes: turn-around time expectations, collecting and handling specimens, proper documentation of sample collection.
Accurately maintains charge tech responsibilities; work allocation, collection requirements, turn-around time management, and staff communication.
Prepares for and participates in inspections, Quality Assurance activities, properly maintains records, assists with preparing and updating section policies and procedures to fulfill the requirements of the accrediting agencies by following the provided protocol.
Oversees collection of data for QA activities as directly observed.
Assists with completing CAP checklist responses in preparation for on-site or self-inspection.
Completes and communicates policy and procedure changes in a timely manner and educates staff on the need for the change.
Procedure manuals are reviewed/revised at least every two years.
Assists Service Leader with problem resolution and follow-up.
Communicates efficiently by answering telephones, taking messages, and forwarding information or calls to appropriate staff.
Appropriate communication skill as directly observed by the Service Leader or designee.
Phone calls are acted upon promptly and handled in a professional manner per the customer service protocol as directly observed.
Employee brings issues of concern directly to the appropriate Service Leader or designee's attention as directly observed.
Participates in Continuing Education.
One education session on developing leadership/management skills.
Required annual Continuing Education hours.
