Description

  • Purpose of Job
    • The Cardiovascular Technologist will perform and serve as a resource to staff re: the technical duties of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab to provide care to patients undergoing invasive cardiovascular procedures as well as selected non-invasive cardiology procedures.  The Cardiovascular Technologist will assist the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Manager in supporting the medical and nursing staff in the care and diagnosis of the patient experiencing cardiac pathologies in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.  
  • Job Requirements
    • Education
      • An Associate's degree (two-year program) or equivalent formal training program required.
      • Bachelor's Degree (e.g., BA, BS, BSN) preferred.

    • License/Certifications
      • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
      • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
      • Registered Vascular Tech (RVT), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in Radiography (R), or Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist preferred.

    • Experience
      • Three to five years - cardiac cath lab / special procedures lab required.
      • Five to eight years - cardiac cath lab / special procedures lab preferred.

    • Skills
      • EKG Interpretation skills & Hemodynamic skills required.
      • EKG Interpretation skills and Hemodynamic skills with knowledge of computer resources & database management preferred.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Physical
      • Continuously stand/walk or lift/handle/carry material or equipment of moderate weight (20 to 50 lbs.). Ability to work while wearing lead garment, bending, twisting.

    • Environmental
      • Located in an indoor area with frequent exposure to mild physical discomfort from dust, fumes, temperature, and noise.

    • Hazards
      • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Category 1: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials.
      • Is subject to working in a radiation producing environment, or working with radioactive materials.
  • Essential Job Functions
    • Essential Functions I
       

      • Provides quality care within scope of practice to ensure optimal patient experience and outcomes.
        • Accurately and completely documents patient care delivered during procedure when stationed at the monitor.
        • Efficiently provides safe patient care as needed, to include patient teaching, preparation, transport, dismissal to receiving unit and completion of charges.
        • Assists with patient assessment within scope of practice re:: procedure including physiological, psychosocial and environmental needs, communicates that information and documents information as per assigned role.

      • Maintains working knowledge of procedures and equipment used in the Cath Lab by performing procedures, calibrating and participating in Quality Control Procedures for equipment, attending inservices, orientation and asking questions to ensure quality patient care and optimum efficiency of the department.
        • Maintains competency with the following procedures: coronary angiography, cardiac catheterization, insertion of intraaortic balloon pump, temporary pacing, vertriculography, aortography, measurement of cardiac output, atrial pacing, permanent/ICD insertion and peripheral studies by being able to set up for and complete the procedure in a timely and effective fashion.
        • Anticipates and responds to patient and physician needs during procedures in a timely fashion.

        • Understands expected outcomes and patient response to procedures based upon appropriate delivery of care.
        • Set up, calibrate and performs daily quality control activities on all equipment in the cath lab based upon appropriate procedures and documentation.

      • Executes proper scrub technique by adhering to principles of sterile technique in preparing/manipulating disposable equipment to minimize risk of infection to the patient, minimize cost, and assist the cardiologist during invasive cardiology procedures.
        • Mastery of basic principles of sterile technique as evidenced by setting up sterile trays and handling equipment without contamination.
        • Knowledge of, proper selection of, and preparation of all sterile equipment needed for procedures to protect patient and avoid waste.
        • Cleans and prepares equipment for sterilization based upon appropriate standards as measured by supplies that fail the sterilization process.

      • Accurately monitors and measures hemodynamic information to ensure quality care and diagnosis of the patient through vigilant monitoring. Attend inservices and orientations, and continues self study as needed.
        • Accurately sets up, calibrates, and operates the hemodynamic equipment in the Cath Lab per policy and procedure.
        • Attends inservices and meetings as required as documented in minutes and inservice record.

      • Coordinates patient care to provide for the management of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
        • Communicates pertinent information regarding patient care appropriately and clearly including report to nursing staff caring for patient post-procedure.
        • Demonstrates the willingness and ability to assist the cath lab team as needed, and when needed.
        • Consults with co-workers and other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs and discharge plan.

      • Safety initiative - Complies with FAMC safety policies and procedures and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, JCAHO, CLIA, etc.)
        • Performs job duties in a manner consistent with organization and departmental safety policies and procedures.
        • Maintains certification in advanced cardiac life support.
        • Complies with and maintains radiation safety and monitoring policies .
        • Completes departmental safety requirements, I.e., blitz, departmental in-services, etc., on an annual basis.

    • Essential Functions II
       

      • Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by management.
