  • Purpose of Job
    • The practice of nursing by a registered nurse shall mean the assumption of responsibility and accountability for those nursing actions which include, but are not limited to: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a nursing diagnosis. Execution of the prescribed diagnostic and therapeutic treatment regiments, administering, delegating, and evaluating nursing activities.

    • Education
      • Graduate from an accredited Diploma School of Nursing/College of Nursing with an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
      • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

    • License/Certifications
      • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure by the State of Nebraska required.
      • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
      • Core certification related to specialty preferred.

    • Experience
      • Two to five years previous inpatient nursing experience preferred.
      • Previous surgical experience preferred.

    • Essential Functions I

      • Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria.
        • Demonstrate ability to identify opportunities for and give individualized customer service/patient care according to customer/patient needs.


      • Perform an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the assigned patient's ongoing nursing care needs.
        • Include data from the patient/significant other(s) in the assessment as appropriate.

        • Prioritize data collection according to patient's immediate needs.
        • Use assessment findings in discharge planning.

        • Participates in surgical time-out, fire risk assessment, and case summary for each operative procedure.

        • Wears appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and follows standard and policy for attire in the Operating Room (OR).

        • Identifies, labels and handles specimens according to facility policy and procedure, including hand-off situations and disposition of specimen.

        • Applies base knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care.
        • Implement a plan of care:
          • Protects the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources.

          • Assist with patient positioning. Communicate any pre-op assessment that may impact the position.

          • Performs counts according to facility policy and procedure during procedures and hand-off situations to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items.

          • Performs interventions to maintain patient normothermia during the operative procedure.
          • Performs interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection.

          • Applies the principles of asepsis and sterile technique during the surgical procedure.

          • Provides care for all patient populations (i.e. pediatric, adolescent, geriatric) as needed, identifying specific needs of population.
          • Act as patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.


      • Develop/review/revise and individualize the plan of care to address the patient's nursing care needs for optimum patient care outcomes. (Consultation and resources, nurses as teachers.)
        • Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate.
        • Provide teaching specific to the patient's health care problem.

        • Care plan reflects continuing care needs and/or referrals for discharge/transfer.

      • Implement interventions that are consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner (Professional Models of Care).
        • Is familiar with, and follows, nursing protocols and standards of care for their unit.

        • Use current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature.

      • Evaluate patient care to determine response to care/interventions for optimal patient outcome.
        • Monitor outcomes and documents patient response to interventions.
        • Evaluate the patient's capabilities and/or limitations related to nursing and medical interventions.
        • Continually monitors the patient and/or significant other(s) ability to manage care needs after dismissal.
        • Give a complete verbal or written change of shift report to the oncoming care provider. Includes current care requirements, to include SBAR (situation, background, assessment and recommendation) content, and is familiar with the overall plan of care.
        • Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations (physical and mental).

      • Perform technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety (autonomy).
        • Able to competently perform technical skills independently.
        • Is accountable to learn new skills and equipment within areas' specifications and time frame.
        • Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information and policy and procedure manuals.
        • Follow appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.
        • Know location and operation of emergency equipment and supplies.
        • Performs surgical scrub role, adhering to all essential functions demonstrated in that role.
        • Demonstrates proper use of instruments, equipment, suturing, and stapling devices.

        • Communicate to appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues.
        • Work within the scope of practice as defined by State Nurse Practice Act.
        • Observes appropriate precautions when administering hazardous medications or handling excreta from patients who have received hazardous medications.
        • Delegate tasks according to the scope of practice and job descriptions of personnel utilized during the operative procedure.
        • Demonstrates an ongoing awareness of, and participation in the Performance Improvement program. Is alert to potential performance improvement problems and actively participates in solving such problems.

      • Review, delegate and evaluate plans for appropriate utilization of staff at all levels of practice in accordance with the provision of the state's Nurse Practice Act and the Professional Standards of Practice.

      • Participate in ongoing planning, implementation and initiation of new Operating Room staff and students.
        • Facilitate the clinical orientation of the orientee.
        • Facilitate socialization into the work team.
        • Assists the orientee in identifying learning needs and implementing a developmental plan.
        • Provides learning experiences, facilitates new experiences based on case availability and available mentors.
        • Coordinates orientee's patient assignments to ensure completion of learning needs.
        • Evaluate the care planning and documentation by the orientee.
        • Evaluate the organizational skills of the orientee.
        • Evaluates orientee informally on a daily basis, completes evaluation forms and assists staff development nurse and service leader in discussions and mentoring for success.
        • Assists orientee in completion of skill checklist, orientation checklist and map.
