Job Description

  • Purpose of Job
    • To perform overnight, daytime, or home sleep studies on those with suspected sleep disorders.
  • Job Requirements
    • Education
      • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D) required

    • Experience
      • 3 to 6 months experience in sleep testing is preferred.

    • License/Certifications
      • Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) required.
      • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.

    • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
      • Good understanding of all aspects of sleep diagnostic testing.
      • Ability to perform Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing (MWT), and scoring polysomnograms.

      • Gather and Analyze Patient Information.
        • Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet patient specific needs (Physical/ mental limitations, current emotional/ physiological status regarding the testing procedures, pertinent medical/ social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
        • Completes and verifies documentation.
        • Explains pre-testing, testing, and post testing procedures to the patient.

      • Prepares and calibrates equipment for testing.
        • Determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary, to equipment.
        • Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
        • Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary. Performs positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.

      • Polysomnographic procedures
        • Follows procedural protocols such as MSLT, MWT, Parasomnia studies, positive airway pressure, and oxygen titration.
        • Performs data acquisition while monitoring.
        • Documents routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure and significant events in order to facilitate scoring.

      • Polysomnographic record scoring.
        • Scores sleep/wake stages according to guidelines.
        • Scores clinical events according to protocols.
        • Generates accurate reports for physician review

      • Polysomnographic physician review.
        • Facilitates communication to pulmonologists for interpretation.

      • Maintains supply inventory.
        • Maintains supply orders as needed.

    • Essential Functions II

      • Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by management.
