  • Purpose of Job
    • Responsible for providing appropriate nursing care to clients served.
  • Job Requirements
    • Education
      • Current valid Iowa Registered Nurse (RN) License, valid compact multistate license to work in Iowa, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.

    • Experience
      • Two years of medical/surgical experience required.
      • One year occupational health, emergency room, family practice clinic or school nursing experience preferred.
      • One to three years' experience using an Electronic Medical Record preferred.

    • License/Certifications
      • Current valid Iowa Registered Nurse (RN) License, valid compact multistate license to work in Iowa, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
      • Maintain current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
      • Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug Testing Collector Certification preferred.

    • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
      • Must be able to travel between clinic locations.
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
      • Proficient level of experience with MS Office with Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint for communication and presentations.
      • Ability to organize and perform multiple tasks, problem-solve and prioritize work assignments to meet tight deadline with little or no supervision.
      • Ability to mentor, supervise, delegate and evaluate employee performance.
      • Ability to present on-the-job injury/illness data and appropriate analysis for trend and pattern information, action planning and preventative strategies.

  • Essential Job Functions
    • Essential Functions I

      • Demonstrates clinical knowledge of occupational health nursing and provides appropriate nursing care to clients served by the Employee Health Department.
        • Follows established policies, procedures, and nursing protocols for the department.
        • Completes post offer health examinations ensuring that all job requirements are met including immunizations are current, obtains health history and consults with Worker's Compensation Case Manager regarding any orthopedic history or issues.
        • Obtains all appropriate documentation (medical releases and prior immunizations) as appropriate prior to employee start date.
        • Obtains consents as appropriate, including parental consent.
        • Performs visions screening, notifies employee and Human Resources (HR) as necessary.
        • Draws blood as needed for titers and screening.
        • Notifies Human Resources (HR) of employee's status after completion of post offer health examinations maintaining confidentiality of the employee.
        • Provides mask fits per OSHA regulations and policy.
        • Provides health screens.
        • Utilizes assessment skills to determine client's ability to return to work after an illness.
        • Effectively assesses employee after an exposure and ensures follow up.
        • Documents information on department forms and in client records in a timely and complete manner.
        • Utilizes assessment skills to determine client's injury and facilitate any needed medical treatment, and informs Worker's Compensation Case Manager.

      • Performs drug testing according to protocol and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
        • Completes chain of custody forms and consents completely and accurately.
        • Communicates results to appropriate contact person, if needed.
        • Forwards forms and specimens to the proper resource, when applicable.
        • Is current with Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing certification.

      • Provides follow-up care for a client involved in a blood/body exposure.
        • Determines the need for follow-up of exposures according to Blood or Body Fluid (BBF) protocol and Center for Disease Control (CDC) regulations.
        • Provide counseling specific to the client's needs regarding Blood or Body Fluid (BBF) exposure.
        • Ensures communication of lab results to client and source's physician, when applicable.

      • Initiates action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risk(s) to the client (i.e. injury, needle punctures).
        • Completes report forms for employee injury/illness.
        • Communicates to appropriate personnel regarding safety issues.
        • Takes a pro-active role in injury/illness prevention and safety awareness.

      • Provides clinical knowledge and nursing care to Shared Services System (SSS) employees. Works collaboratively with Human Resources (HR) Division to monitor trends and patterns of injury/illness, to develop action plans to improve safety and reduce injury/illness. Works with SSS management team to proactively support safety initiatives, training/retraining of staff and is diligent about the prevention of hazards on campus.
        • Understands the work flow and processes at SSS.
        • Facilitates the pre-hire screening scheduling.
        • Acts as resource for vaccines, blood draws and blood pressure checks for employees.
        • Coordinates annual flu clinic(s) for SSS and Midlands Medical Services.
        • Works with physical therapy to reinforce back school training through observation providing positive reinforcement for those demonstrating correct technique and providing just in time training to those as required.
        • Member of the SSS Safety committee and provides quarterly reporting of worker's compensation information.
        • Anticipates upcoming changes and recommends improvements in processes.

      • Promotes a culture of safety by supporting the Safe Patient Handling (SPH) process.
        • Supports and promotes that staff safety is equally as important as patient safety.
        • Acts as resource on patient care ergonomics, equipment use and SPH techniques.
        • Encourages and supports reporting of all incidents resulting from patient handling.
        • Investigates all SPH injuries. Works with managers and staff to define root cause and develop a plan to prevent re-occurrence.
        • Works and communicates with Workers Compensation Case Manager to ensure accurate reporting of the injury.
        • Tracks and trends MJE SPH injuries, and reports to the MJE Safety Committee.

      • Performs technical skills and paperwork completely and independently.
        • Able to competently perform technical skills independently.
        • Is accountable to learn new skills and equipment use within specific timeframes.
        • Takes part in department record keeping activities (lab results, OSHA log, Inf. Control, etc.), as needed.

      • Provides excellent customer service to clients served by the Employee Health Department.
        • Courteously answers phone and answers questions, takes messages, or forwards to an Employee Health nurse if necessary.
        • Schedules appointments accurately and within department policy.
        • Documents in the scheduler that the client was here for their scheduled appointment with 100% accuracy.
        • Greets clients when they arrive, communicates to clients in a professional and courteous manner.
        • Ensure that Release of Medical Information is obtained prior to releasing clients requested information.
        • Responds to client's needs directed at meeting defined goals per departmental policy.
        • Ensures clients sign in on arrival with 100% accuracy.
        • Sends appropriate compliance forms to Human Resources for entry into Lawson.
        • Prepares forms and paperwork required for physicals/appointments that have been scheduled, and walk ins.
        • Prepares employee documents for scanning process.
        • Monitors scanning process to achieve 100% accuracy.
        • Sends correspondence to department supervisors and/or employees as needed.

      • Maintains a professional behavior in attitudes, demeanor, and interactions to achieve organization's mission.
        • Communicates effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level.
        • Is approachable and professional in working with others.
        • Assists in precepting new employees.
        • Actively participates in department projects.

      • Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the client to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the Age Specific Criteria.
        • Tailors education to fit client needs.
        • Involves family or parent when necessary.

      • Promotes wellness activities for clients served by the department.
        • Provides information to clients regarding wellness activities offered by the Health System.
        • Encourages employees to have a primary physician.
        • Provides blood pressure and glucose testing.
        • Dispenses and documents over the counter medications per standing orders upon employee request.
        • Works with HR and MHS Employee Health to coordinate annual flu clinics for MJE.

      • Provides training on Powered Air Purifiers (PARS) for new hires.

      • Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by management.
