Job Description

  • Purpose of Job
    • Prepares abstract according to procedure guidelines to meet Accountable Care Organizations and state regulations and collects and enters information on patients diagnosed with cancer.
  • Job Requirements
    • Education
      • Associates Degree in Health Information Management or a health care related field to include college level courses in Anatomy/Physiology and Medical Terminology required.

    • Experience
      • 1 year tumor registry related experience or 1 year experience within a health related field preferred.

    • License/Certifications
      • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) or eligible for certification to be obtained within 3 years of beginning employment required.

    • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
      • Ability to read/interpret medical records and understand medical terminology.
      • Detail oriented with strong organizational, verbal, interpersonal and computer skills.
      • Working knowledge of excel and word (Microsoft Office Applications)

      • Assures that an abstract is completed for each cancer diagnosis
        • Prepares abstract on each newly diagnosed cancer patient according to procedure guidelines to meet ACOS and state regulations.

      • Enters accurate information into the Tumor Registry database
        • Collects and enters information on patients diagnosed with cancer.

      • Assigns appropriate coding to each patient abstract
        • Uses ICD-O coding principles accurately.

      • Accurate application of FORDS information
        • Uses FORDS manual accurately for abstracting.

      • Meets abstracting standards per ACOS and Tumor Registry Dept
        • 90% of cases are abstracted within 6 months of date of first contact (ACOS)
        • On an average it takes 2.8 hours to complete an abstract (TR Dept)-include audit from State

      • Involvement with Tumor Board conferences and case finding activities
        • Accurately records treatment information discussed at conferences.
        • Assists with case finding activities.

    • Essential Functions II


      • Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by management.

      • Follows and understands the mission, vision, core values, Employee Standards of Behavior and company policies/procedures.

      • Other duties as assigned.
