Job Description

  • Purpose of Job
    • Collect and preserve blood samples and certain other body fluids for analysis.
  • Job Requirements
    • Education
      • High school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent required.
      • Participates in mandatory in-services and continuing education programs as mandated by policies and procedures, accrediting agencies and as directed by service leader or service executive.

    • Experience
      • One to two years minimum Phlebotomy experience that qualifies for American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification eligibility required AND experience in the following areas required:
        • Routine venipuncture.
        • AND
        • Routine dermal puncture.
        • AND experience in one of the following areas required:
        • Arterial blood gas collection.
        • OR
        • Bone marrow assist.
        • OR
        • Specimen processing.
        • AND experience in one of the following areas required:
        • Infant venipuncture.
        • OR
        • Port accessing and de-accessing.

    • License/Certifications
      • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification required within 18 months of date of hire to maintain employment.

  • Essential Job Functions
    • Essential Functions I


      • Performs duties of Phlebotomist I and II to assist in the daily workload by performing assigned tasks.
        • Assists in daily workload.
        • Compliant per PPE guidelines.
        • Performs basic dermal and venipuncture collection. Performs arterial blood gas collection or bone marrow assists or specimen processing.
        • Performs Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specimen collection or port accessing or de-accessing.
        • Maintains compliance with established processes: turn-around time expectations, collecting and handling specimens, proper documentation of sample collection.
        • Accommodates patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.

      • Review operations and work performed in the section; identify problems, and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
        • Identify problems and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary with the Phlebotomy Service Leader or designee to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
        • Accurately maintains charge tech responsibilities; work allocation, collection requirements, turn-around time management, and staff communication.
        • Organizational and department competencies are completed 100% of the time.

      • Document orientation, training, and education to ensure employee competence, provide excellent services, and meet accreditation requirements by effective verbal or written communication.
        • Organizational and department competencies are completed 100% of the time.
        • Evidence that new procedures and procedure revisions are read and understood.
        • Assists in training new and existing staff, including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skill training checklists.
        • Identifies problems and initiates immediate follow-up as necessary with the Phlebotomy Service Leader or designee to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment

      • Communicates efficiently by answering telephones, taking messages, and forwarding information or calls to appropriate staff.
        • Appropriate communication skill as directly observed by the Service Leader or designee.
        • Phone calls are acted upon promptly and handled in a professional manner per the customer service protocol as directly observed.
        • Employee brings issues of concern directly to the appropriate Service Leader or designee's attention as directly observed.

      • Participates in Continuing Education.
        • Required annual Continuing Education hours.

    • Essential Functions II


      • Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by management.

      • Follows and understands the mission, vision, core values, Employee Standards of Behavior and company policies/procedures.
