Position as part of process safety group involves providing design services in areas of fire protection and process safety to Kiewit projects with a focus on safe, cost effective, and innovative designs that achieve client expectations and further Kiewit's legacy of excellence.

Our rapidly growing oil, gas and chemical team, which includes structural, civil, piping, mechanical, process, process safety, electrical, instrument and control disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the EPCC delivery model for dynamic process facilities. 


This position is based out of our Energy Corridor Office in Houston, TX 


  •     Develops small to mid-sized FEED/EPC project or proposals for Process Safety with no supervision.
  •     Utilizes codes and standards to complete assignments. Effectively applies common industry practices in performance of work.
  •     Receives little to no instruction on routine work and detailed instruction on new assignment from more experienced engineer. Receives guidance on high risk or advanced conditions.
  •     Performs Fire Hazard Analysis or Fire protection evaluation based on facility hazards and specify type, quantity and equipment for adequate hazard detection and protection.
  •     Design firewater, foam protection systems.
  •     Executes fire water demand and fire water hydraulic calculation.
  •     Develops fire water PFDs and P&IDs.  
  •     Specifies type and quantity of Fire and Gas system and develops Fire and Gas Cause and Effect Matrix 
  •     Participates in HAZOP, Management of Change (MOC) safety reviews and other process safety activates.  
  •     Develops and checks less experienced engineers to solve design issues.
  •     Manage multiple responsibilities or assignments with set expectations and meet deadlines.
  •     Produces design and stay within budget and schedule.  
  •     Interacts effectively with other groups to find best solutions on difficult issues.
  •     Recognizes the importance of customer needs.
  •     Specify actions to take when standards or contract requirements are not met.
  •     Plans work independently with no supervision and consults with others on technical details as needed.
  •     Initiates meetings within own team, other disciplines or internal customers for clarity on work.
  •     Some travel required (10%).
  • Qualifications

  •     Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, mechanical or fire protection minimum required.
  •     5-10 year relevant fire protection experience in oil, gas and chemical industry.
  •     Has Professional Engineer (P.E.) License or working towards a P.E. (desirable). 
  •     Ability and proven experience to perform Position Responsibilities. 
  •     Strong work ethic, willing to do what it takes to get the job done right the first time.
  •     Adjusts to varying demands of work and performs well. 
  •     Develops and presents work in well-constructed written and verbal methods like reports, emails, and documents.  Clearly conveys messages and ideas, gains understanding.
  •     Works collaboratively across departments and involves others in solving problems. Initiates meetings within own team, other disciplines or internal customers for clarity on work.
  •     Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner. Works well with others to accomplish common goals and objectives.
