Job Description

Major Function and Purpose:

Research and identify prospective funders including: corporations, foundations and government agencies in support of Iowa Western’s mission and strategic plan. Provide support and oversight of grant processes from development to application, implementation and regulation and follow up.  Exercise a high degree of independent judgment, initiative, organization, communication and research skills.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Research grants, funding opportunities, and programs to support college-wide activities and prepare grant applications.
  • Serve as a team leader and coordinate all grant writing initiatives which support College-wide activities.  Provide writing assistance as necessary.
  • Conduct interdepartmental meetings to identify and prioritize project needs, coordinate and research grant assignments and create/edit grant opportunities.
  • Review all funding applications for accuracy, completeness and clarity and ensure requirements have been met.
  • Coordinate and plan funding program activities, including the prioritization, planning and scheduling of activities to guide process efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provide timely advice and information on funding opportunities, requirements, and procedures.
  • Collaborate in implementing project funding strategies while maintaining and monitoring grant information.
  • Serve as a team leader to ensure proper reporting occurs.  Remain proactive to identify and resolve issues and conflicts with funding agencies.
  • Prepare reports as required by funding agencies.
  • Serve as a resource to the College President and Cabinet members regarding state, federal and private funding programs; provide updates, written reports and recommendations as needed.
  • Create and distribute standard and special reports, studies, summaries, and analyses as required.
  • Collaborate with all areas of the College to ensure federal, state, corporate, and private funding opportunities are adequately tracked by utilizing appropriate databases and systems for recording and tracking research, grant proposals, awards, and related statistical information.
  • Subscribe to various research tools including foundation search engines, applicable group subscriptions, etc., and maintain a library of reference documentation.  This includes funding agency requirements, forms, curriculum vitae, abstracts, reference literature, and other pertinent materials.
  • Follow up with appropriate staff to review revenues and expenditures, project status, and to ensure proper expenditures are made for all grant projects and maintain the appropriate communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write and edit structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite and Internet Explorer.
  • Possess knowledge and ability to use foundation research tools.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources.
  • Ability to match college projects with grant dollars.
  • Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  • Strong contributor in team environments.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two years experience with intensive writing skills, preferably grant writing.
  • Excellent skills researching, following directives, and maintaining detailed records and follow-up.
  • Previous experience with non-profit fundraising.
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environments.
  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Able to monitor and meet income goals.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Occasional standing, pushing, pulling, and grasping.  Frequent reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work.  
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
