The Role


Under general supervision, reviews and processes short-term disability and leave claims. Applies expertise to manage an inventory of claims to the appropriate outcomes Ensures accurate and timely response to customer inquiries.


Functional Responsibilities


  • Manages assigned workload of short-term disability (STD) claims and federal, state and/or customer-defined leave requests within the established customer service, production, and quality standards.
  • Applies the appropriate contractual provisions, legal guidelines, case management resources, claim procedures, concepts, principles, and protocols to manage claims to the appropriate outcomes.
  • Communicates with claimants, employers, and various medical professionals to gather information regarding the application for, payment of, and ongoing management of STD and leave benefits.
  • Makes initial and ongoing benefit decisions and approves or denies benefits within established guidelines. 
  • Evaluates and refers appropriate claims to risk management resources such as Vocational Rehabilitation, Managed Care, Fraud, Social Security, Second Opinion and Subrogation. 
  • Serves as primary contact for customer inquiries and participates in meetings to review claim and leave decisions, and educate employer on program administration.
  • May be assigned to provide guidance and mentoring to others and projects assigned at managers discretion. 






  • Bachelor’s Degree




  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state leave of absence laws, case management practices; medical terminology; knowledge of short-term disability procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with the right level of detail; identify and solve problems; focus on customers; achieve results; enter, organize and retrieve data using a variety of software (Excel, e.g.) and proprietary claims applications.
  • At least 2 years of claims handling experience.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in benefits administration, disability claims handling, and/or customer service.
  • Excellent listening skills, verbal communications skills and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and find the appropriate solution.
  • Competencies should include customer focus, interpersonal ability, results orientation, adaptability, teamwork/collaboration
  • A demonstrated track record of consistently meeting and/or exceeding performance expectations
  • Possesses a bias for action and avoids workplace distractions
  • Drives performance targets to completion
