Lincoln Financial Group is searching for a Long- Term Disability Specialist to join our Social Security Advocacy Team (SSAT).  In this role, you will be responsible for the continued management of a caseload of approved long- term disability claims referred by our field operations.  These claims are pended for Social Security benefits and may require Change in Definition evaluations.  You will be responsible for reviewing, investigating and determining the appropriate disposition of assigned claims by: interpreting and applying appropriate contract terms/provisions; and, following ERISA/statutory legal guidelines and case management procedures.  In addition, you will regularly exercise independent judgment in interpreting information and engaging expert resources, and use the disability claim system to manage and pay claims while meeting all service, timeframe, and productions standards.  Specific claims may require extensive interactions with claimants, policyholders, attorneys, and other interested third parties.  As well as the requisite technical skills, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to efficiently handle a high-volume caseload, and support continuous improvement initiatives to more efficiently and effectively manage claims.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage a high-volume inventory (approximately 450) of referred claims to determine appropriate course of action, using expert resources and an in-depth understanding of LTD claims management principles to make the appropriate determination.
  • Establish action plans for claims based on case facts, best practices, protocols, regulatory issues and available resources, while following established case management practices.  Document claim files with actions taken.
  • Evaluate and refer appropriate claims to risk management resources such as Vocational Rehabilitation, Managed Care, Fraud, Social Security, and Subrogation.
  • Respond to various written and telephone inquiries including eligibility, approval/denial determinations, status and continuation or closure of benefits.
  • Communicate with claimants, employers, attorneys, and various medical professionals regarding the ongoing management of assigned claims.
  • Articulate verbally and in writing the rationale for eligibility determinations with claimants and employers, and set ongoing expectations throughout the claim duration.
  • Calculate the liability for each claim applying all appropriate offsets such as social security, workers compensation and third parties.
  • Identifies over/underpayments, promptly notifies claimant and makes appropriate referral to FRS for calculation
  • Manages claims within multiple funding arrangements.
  • Ensure Performance Guarantees are met.
  • Conduct supplemental investigation on LTD claims and makes determinations based on contractual change in definition of disability.
  • Negotiate settlement within authority limits; escalate to team manager as appropriate.  

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience, and 1-3+ years’ relevant business experience.
  • Knowledge of insurance, medical terminology, and case management in same or LTD experience is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of ASO and Fully-Insured claims, as well as familiarity with scheduled payments, offsets, and deductions related to disability benefits preferred.
  • Excellent organization/planning, and judgment skills to manage a varied, high-volume workload and competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and negotiation skills in the evaluation and resolution of claims.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to provide information in a clear, concise and diplomatic manner with diverse audiences.
  • Analytical skills to gather information, analyze facts, and make recommendations based upon information collected.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a caseload through effective time management and awareness of priorities.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications, to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. #L!-AY1
