Reporting to the University Librarian and serving on the leadership council for the University Libraries, the Head of Research and Instruction (R&I) leads and develops research and instructional services for the Creighton University Libraries. The R&I department supports nine schools and colleges across two campuses (Omaha, NE, and Phoenix, AZ) through a liaison librarian service model. The head of R&I leads the integration and expansion of information and related literacies, including AI literacy, within university curricula to improve student learning outcomes; leads programs and partnerships to advance research and scholarship; and leads the assessment of R&I activities to demonstrate impact and for the continuous improvement and evolution of services.

  • Manage and supervise a department comprised of eleven research and instruction librarians, including two based in Phoenix, providing a broad range of services, including literature search service and research impact reporting.
  • Lead the integration and expansion of information and related literacies, including AI literacy, within university curricula to improve student learning outcomes.
  • Lead and participate in programs and partnerships to advance research and scholarship.
  • Lead the assessment of instructional and research activities to demonstrate impact and for the continuous improvement and evolution of services.
  • Serve on the leadership council for the University Libraries; participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in professional development activities, including service and scholarship.

 

Qualifications:

• Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
• Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in academic libraries, preferably in research and instruction.
• Minimum of three years of supervisory experience, preferably supervising professionals with faculty status.

• Advanced knowledge of academic library resources and skills in searching scholarly literature using bibliographic databases.
• Experience leading, coordinating, or working within a liaison librarian service model that includes instructional, research, and collection development activities.
• Awareness of current trends in the profession, including open strategies and strategies for integrating AI into libraries.
• User-centered orientation with a strong focus on meeting the needs of students, faculty, and researchers.
• Collaboration, teamwork, effective human relations skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Experience with data-driven decision-making.
• Knowledge of scholarly publishing metrics and experience using tools to demonstrate research impact.
• Knowledge of or experience with data-intensive research across the disciplines.
• Knowledge of or experience with systematic review services.
• Familiarity with clinical library services.
• Familiarity with course management software, such as Canvas.
