Description

Our Carpenter Shop has an open position. Depending upon the qualifications of the final candidate they will be hired into either a Carpenter I OR Carpenter II. Below is the summary and qualifications for each role.

Carpenter I:

Will provide mid level Carpentry experience and work. Will complete work orders by performing rough and finish carpentry projects and repair University buildings and contents. Will work from blueprints, specifications, drawings, and instructions to design, build, remodel, retrofit, maintain and repair various types of facilities and structures.

Carpenter II:
will provide senior level Carpentry experience and work. Will complete work orders by performing rough and finish carpentry projects and repair University buildings and contents. Will work from blueprints, specifications, drawings, and instructions to design, build, remodel, retrofit, maintain and repair various types of facilities and structures. The Carpenter II will inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building safety codes and regulations; inspect related work by contractors; estimate cost, time and materials for carpentry projects.

While performing the duties of either job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching and crawling all day. The employee must frequently lift and move items up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

This position will also have locksmith responsibilities. Making keys, tracking keys in the system, fixing tumblers etc... Training will be provided.


This position will work Monday to Friday; 7am-3:30pm. Note, this position may at times require evening, weekend, and holiday work as well as possible “on call rotations.”

Carpenter I Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; Associates Degree in related trade/field preferred;
2-3 year’s work related years broad experience in carpentry to acquire knowledge of the methods and techniques of the carpentry trade; OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Carpenter II Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; Associates Degree in related trade/field preferred;

4-5 year’s years of progressively responsible carpentry experience; OR, Completion of a four year federally approved technical training program in carpentry AND one year of carpentry experience.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities for level I and II:
Basic computer proficiency/skills;
Must have a current drivers license with a clean driving record for the last 3 years and no major violations within the last 5 years;
Knowledge of shop practices and skill in using shop tools and equipment;
Ability to read blueprints and translate into fabricated products;
Knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials common to the trade;
Knowledge of all applicable code standards and regulations;
Locksmith and/or key experience desired (not required)

Strong communication skills (i.e. verbal and written);
Ability to self-start, work independently and complete work orders in a timely manner;
Strong customer service focus;
Knowledge and familiarity of safety standards and regulations;
Ability to see details at close range;
Ability to lift, push, pull or carry objects;
Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs;
Ability to work at heights of 20 feet and above (REQUIRED);
Ability to work outside in various temperatures (summer/winter) for extended periods of time;
Ability to be “on-call” on a rotational schedule

Required Licenses/Certifications:
Must have a current and valid drivers license with a clean driving record for the last 3 years and no major violations within the last 5 years
