Systems Engineer - Omaha, NE

Job Summary: Assists Information Services management in the design, implementation, maintenance, and documentation of the information systems infrastructure for computer operations. Monitors systems resource usage and systems logs, and makes recommendations as needed to improve the availability, stability, security and performance of the local area network and all related equipment and applications. Works closely with Network Administrator to provide secure and stable systems for all company applications and data storage.

 Essential Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a high-availability VMware virtualization environment including VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus, ESXi, VMware Data Protection, VMware Site Recovery Manager, VMware Horizon View and other related products.
  • Monitors critical production servers for predictive hardware failure notifications and performance-related issues. Reports system hardware failures to management immediately and works quickly to identify and resolve the cause of failure. Experience with SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor preferred.
  • Manages Dell and EqualLogic storage systems. Monitors disk resource usage and makes appropriate configuration changes for best performance. Forecasts storage and performance needs for budgetary planning and recommends timely upgrades to meet storage requirements. Maintains current level of storage system firmware updates as they become available.
  • Establishes and maintains highly-effective firewall and security fabric policies, including Web application and content filtering, domain and IP address blocking, and intrusion detection and prevention. Experience with Fortinet security solutions is preferred including Fortinet Security Fabric, FortiGate, FortiAnalyzer, FortiAuthenticator, FortiAP, FortiCloud, FortiManager, FortiMail, FortiSandbox, FortiSwitch and FortiClient. Monitors security logs and notifications in order to identify intrusion activity and takes appropriate steps to mitigate further activity.
  • Monitors the performance and reliability of all email services, including Office 365 and on-premise email servers.  Monitors the flow of internal email, as well as email flow to and from the Internet. Maintains spam, phishing and virus blocking policies and configuration settings on email systems and appliances. Develops and maintains reporting systems to identify potential email resource abuse. Assists with e-mail client software installation or client software problems. Troubleshoots Internet e-mail delivery problems. Maintains appropriate DNS records and services for all company domain names.
  • Configures and supports Microsoft SQL Server database servers and processes, including monitoring of database systems health and performance to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security. Plans for and implements major release upgrades of Microsoft SQL Server installations.
  • Works with application developers by assisting with application deployment. Assures the security of all developer applications that are deployed within our private network or on our public servers. Attends application developers’ weekly team meetings.
  • Stays abreast of newly-identified software vulnerabilities and bugs.  Maintains adequate patch levels on all company computer operating systems, appliances and application software in order to avoid system failure, compromise or denial of service events due to malware or other malicious attempts to disrupt system stability. Maintains Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Uses other available tools to thoroughly scan systems for vulnerabilities.
  • Assists in the maintenance of all networking switch equipment and infrastructure, troubleshooting and resolving network issues and recommending / implementing changes or upgrades that improve the overall performance, stability and security of the network infrastructure.
  • Assists other members of the Telecommunications and Networking team in resolving hardware and software problems.  Assists or leads team members in troubleshooting Windows Server and SUSE Linux problems. Performs a variety of other activities including providing backup Help Desk support from time to time and assisting with disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Involved with company annual SSAE 18 SOC1 audit, and with quarterly control testing in preparation close of reporting period.
  • On-call for after-hours system-related problems. Performs monthly systems and network maintenance on the third Sunday of every month.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education: 4 Year Undergraduate Degree or equivalent knowledge in Information Technology. Relevant certifications preferred. Security certifications preferred.

Work Experience: 5 to 8 years’ of experience as a Systems Administrator or equivalent experience in a similar role.

Technical Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of a number of integrated concepts / technologies within a specific professional area.  Highly specialized in one area with a broad understanding and ability to apply expertise in multiple areas.  Job is viewed to be a senior subject matter expert by company management and is sought after for knowledge resource.  Evaluates and recommends alternate technical or professional solutions in order to reach business goals.  Counsels, consults, mentors and transfers expertise to staff.

Communication: Must be able to communicate technical information effectively and professionally with all internal and external contacts in a format that is appropriate to the listener’s level of knowledge.

Characteristics Specified to Job:  Attendance is required with a physical presence of the employee at the workplace during scheduled hours of work. Handling reasonably necessary stressors of the job and working reasonably well with others. Special Physical Requirements: The work performed is sedentary and the job allows employees to remain seated or to sit and stand intermittently to perform most duties.  Less than 10% of the time will be spent performing physical activities and the job does not involve stooping, crawling or kneeling except in occasional situations.  However, a negligible amount of lifting, pulling and pushing may be required to perform the work and some walking, standing, and manual dexterity may be required in routine activities such as carrying papers, opening file drawers, operating basic office equipment and driving a car.
