Systems Engineer

Job Summary: Assists management in the development, maintenance, and documentation of the information systems infrastructure for computer operations. Monitors systems resource usage and makes recommendations as needed to improve the availability, stability, efficiency and performance of the local area network and related equipment.  Works closely with Network Administrator to provide secure and stable systems for all company applications and data storage.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Monitors critical production servers for predictive hardware failure notifications or performance issues.  Reports system failures to management immediately, and works quickly to identify and rectify the cause of failure, working with manufacturer technical support as needed.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of, and experience with, VMware virtualization solutions including VSphere / VCenter, VMware Data Protection, VMware Site Recovery Manager, VMware Horizon and other VMware products.
  • Monitors the performance and reliability of all e-mail servers and processes that are related to e-mail delivery.  Monitors the flow of internal e-mail, as well as e-mail transmissions to and from the Internet.  Maintains spam, phishing and virus blocking software or appliances.  Develops and maintains reporting systems to identify potential e-mail resource abuse.  Assists with e-mail client software installation or client software problems.  Troubleshoots Internet e-mail delivery problems. Maintains appropriate DNS records and services for all company domain names.
  • Manages the enterprise storage systems and storage area network.  Monitors disk resource usage and makes appropriate disk configuration changes.  Forecasts storage needs for budgetary planning.  Recommends timely upgrades to meet storage requirements.
  • Works with application developers assisting with application development and deployment.  Assures the security of all applications that are deployed within our private network or on our public servers.  Attends application developers’ weekly team meetings.
  • Stays abreast of newly-identified software vulnerabilities.  Maintains adequate patch levels on all operating system and application software in order to avoid system compromise or denial of service events due to malware or other malicious attempts to disrupt system stability. Uses available tools to thoroughly scan systems for vulnerabilities.
  • Maintains highly-effective firewall and proxy server policies including content management, domain and IP address blocking, intrusion detection and prevention policies.  Familiarity with Fortinet security solutions preferred.
  • Maintains all networking equipment and infrastructure, troubleshooting and resolving network issues and recommending / implementing changes or upgrades that improve the overall performance and stability of the network infrastructure.
  • Assists other members of the Telecommunications and Networking team in resolving hardware and software problems.  Assists or leads team members in troubleshooting Windows Server and UNIX problems. Performs a variety of other activities including providing backup Help Desk support and assisting with disaster recovery testing.
  • Responds to non-business hours calls for support seven days per week, whether officially on-call or not.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education: 4 Year Undergraduate Degree or equivalent knowledge in Management Information Systems or equivalent experience.  Relevant certification(s) preferred.  Security certifications preferred.

Work Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience as a Network Administrator or equivalent experience in a similar role. Advanced knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol suite, which includes:  Three years’ experience with SMTP and administration of a corporate e-mail system (Office365 preferred).  Solid knowledge of IP routing, switch configuration and subnetting.  Three years’ experience with HTTP and the administration of public and private Web servers. Three years’ experience working with firewall administration. Basic knowledge of Unix / Linux operating systems.

Technical Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of a number of integrated concepts / technologies within a specific professional area.  Highly specialized in one area with a broad understanding and ability to apply expertise in multiple areas.  Job is viewed to be a senior subject matter expert by company management and is sought after for knowledge resource.  Evaluates and recommends alternate technical or professional solutions in order to reach business goals.  Counsels, consults, mentors and transfers expertise to staff.

Communication: Must be able to communicate technical information effectively and professionally with all internal and external contacts in a format that is appropriate to the listener’s level of knowledge.

Characteristics Specified to Job:  Attendance is required with a physical presence of the employee at the workplace during scheduled hours of work. Handling reasonably necessary stressors of the job and working reasonably well with others. Workplace Environment: Workflow and nature of essential job functions although somewhat standard, processing of work requires mental and visual focus.  Business necessitated interruptions occur occasionally and restarting work processes requires the need to briefly review ending points and statuses.

Special Physical Requirements: The work performed is sedentary and the job allows employees to remain seated or to sit and stand intermittently to perform most duties.  Less than 10% of the time will be spent performing physical activities and the job does not involve stooping, crawling or kneeling except in occasional situations.  However, a negligible amount of lifting, pulling and pushing may be required to perform the work and some walking, standing, and manual dexterity may be required in routine activities such as carrying papers, opening file drawers, operating basic office equipment and driving a car.
