Were searching for a Supervisor, Quality & Patient Safety to be responsible for coordination, implementation, and completion of projects across the enterprise with specific deliverables. Promotes excellence in quality, patient safety, and service excellence by facilitating improvement across the enterprise and provides improvement methodology education. Coordinates accreditation and regulatory continuous preparedness. Provides leadership and supervisory support to the Quality Specialists in the Embedded Quality Resource Program.

Essential Functions/Competencies

  • Supervises and supports the Quality Specialists in the Embedded Quality Resource Program. Responsible for evaluating and revising job descriptions and competencies in accordance with departmental/hospital goals and ensuring job functions are being met.

Personnel Management

  • Assists with employee performance management duties including hiring, developing, and terminating (as necessary) staff through performance evaluations, coaching, counseling, goal setting, positive reinforcement, and/or disciplinary action.
  • Develops orientation plans for new employees and monitors the effectiveness of orientation programs.
  • Makes salary recommendations.
  • Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations).
  • Determines human resource needs.
  • Identifies opportunities for coaching and career development with employees within area of responsibility.
  • Participates in professional and continued learning activities and shares knowledge with colleagues.
  • Provides leadership by modeling accountability and by setting expectations of staff.
  • Performance Improvement
  • Works collaboratively with patient care services, ancillary departments, the medical staff, and multidisciplinary groups to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Utilizes evidence-based methodologies to improve systems and processes. Assures accountability assigned for sustainment of performance improvement activities.
  • Responsible to collect, oversee, analyze and display data using tools and techniques that are appropriate for the intended audience.
  • Facilitates all levels of cause analysis, develops standard documentation templates and event specific documents, and works with responsible staff to assure completion of selected actions
  • Serves as liaison and PI resource to Nursing shared governance councils and hospital Interdisciplinary Committees.
  • Maintains the organizations Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Plan, including annual updates and evaluation.
  • Analyzes and aggregates variance information, identifies trends, and reports findings to department and organization leaders as appropriate.

Accreditation & Regulatory

  • Assures the hospitals regulatory continued readiness through facilitation of multidisciplinary teams and work groups.
  • Serves as consultant to hospital leadership and staff on standards interpretation and policy development to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinates, leads, and conducts unit tracers to ensure standards compliance.
  • Perform periodic assessments of Hospital Departments adherence to regulatory standards through the use of an electronic tracking management system. Oversees completion of the Focused Standards Assessment.
  • Coordinates external consultative assessment of regulatory compliance when requested by hospital leadership.
  • Maintain the National Patient Safety Goal scorecard, collecting data from available sources.
  • Coordinates proactive risk assessment utilizing failure mode and effects analysis methodology for at least one high risk process annually
  • Serves as hospital liaison to organ procurement organization Project Management
  • In collaboration with senior leadership, identifies and prioritizes organizational projects that align with the strategic plan.
  • Works collaboratively with project stakeholders to develop a comprehensive project plan. Project plans will include: Scope, Schedule, Cost, Anticipated Outcomes, Organization and Communications, Staffing, Risk and Issue Management, and Change Management.
  • Perform project planning. Create, build, and update project schedules, project charters, project plans, status reports, and work breakdown structures.
  • Foresee potential barriers in projects and communicate accordingly.
  • Facilitate and lead project meetings as necessary.
  • Implement and manage project changes and interventions to achieve desired project outcomes.
  • Collects, analyzes, and displays data demonstrating project performance, using appropriate tools and techniques to project evaluations and assessment of results.
  • Influence others and move toward a common vision or goal. Education
  • Provides formal and just-in-time training on quality improvement and patient safety tactics.
  • Maintains a multi-tiered quality and safety education program. Assess education program annually for effectiveness.
  • Develops and maintains organization-wide templates for documentation of quality improvement activities, assuring consistency of written information.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and background
  • Advanced knowledge of performance improvement, including cause analysis process
  • Advanced knowledge of methods and mechanisms of using data to evaluate safety and performance
  • Advanced knowledge on the relationship between variation and outcome
  • Computer programs including word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, presentations
  • Must demonstrate positive interpersonal relationship skills with individuals and groups in a wide variety of settings
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Able to do strategic planning and project management
  • Skills in negotiation, problem solving, educational, and quality improvement strategies
  • Should be a creative, flexible, risk taker

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university required
  • Masters degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or Patient Safety Leadership required; other equivalent Masters degrees will be considered based on relevant work experience
  • Minimum five years experience in healthcare-related performance/process improvement or project management required.
  • Minimum three years clinical experience required, preferably in pediatrics, if position is filled by a nurse.
  • Experience in managing people and teams preferred.


  • Current and valid Nebraska RN license/RN Compact license required, if position is filled by a nurse.
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association is required, if position is filled by a nurse.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Quality Improvement and Change Concepts (QICC) required within one year of hire.
  • Black Belt preferred.
  • PMP certification preferred.
  • Certified Pediatric Nurse certification preferred, if position is filled by a nurse.
