Children's hiring an Emergency Medical Technician ( EMT) in the Transport department. The EMT provides high quality, individualized, family centered care to pediatric patients ranging from extreme prematurity through adolescence in the critical care transport environment. Care and transport of the critically ill patient is supported through the use of the EMT scope of practice in accordance with the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) standards and hospital policies and procedures. Varied schedules to include weekend and holiday patterns.

  • Demonstrates responsiveness to the organizational functions of the transport process.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of ambulance operations
  • Demonstrates up-to-date knowledge of transport equipment location, function and restocking procedures
  • Provides safe driving of the ambulance according to the Standards of the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and EMS National Standards
  • Safely operates ambulances on emergent and non-emergent transports
  • Utilizes lights and sirens as per Children s Policy adhering to standard safety practices
  • Maintains response times within targeted benchmarks set by the program
  • Works in conjunction with EMS Manager to ensure ambulances are functioning and serviced as scheduled
  • Complies with ambulance, helicopter, and fixed wing operational safety in accordance with current guidelines
  • Checks, cleans, and stocks transport bags and equipment. Ensures equipment is in good working order
  • Maintains all transport equipment in a state of mission readiness by checking all equipment at the beginning of each shift, noting any discrepancies and ensuring steps toward resolution
  • Cleans vehicles and equipment and restocks bags after a transport
  • Completes daily, weekly, monthly and ongoing equipment checklists
  • Completes educational and professional development requirements
  • Assists with patient care within scope of practice including:
  • Obtaining vital signs and assisting with assessments and treatments as necessary
  • Placing patient on transport monitors
  • Moving and securing patient in transport cot/incubator
  • Initiates action to prevent current or potential risk to a patient in an emergency situation
  • Adheres to individualized patient/family plan of care to meet identified needs. (Plan of Care includes current and anticipated actions focused on stabilization, care, and transport needs).
  • Demonstrates age-specific competency within the EMT scope of practice
  • Assesses patient/family need for education and uses an individualized approach in delivery style
  • Communicates changes to medical crew
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job
  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS/COMPETENCIES

  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Accepts assignments to share/teach knowledge and provide clinical support as a preceptor for new staff.
  • Professionally support the assigned unit, as seen through interactions with patients, families, Children s Hospital and Transport staff
  • Accepts and completes other assigned tasks in a professional manner

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from on task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritizing skills
  • Must be able to work in an environment that is exposed to non-conventional motions, noise, vibration, fumes and extreme heat/cold.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Completion of an EMT course required
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as an EMT preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current and Valid Nebraska and National Registry EMT or Paramedic license required
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association is required.
  • Must have valid driver s license with an acceptable motor vehicle driving record required
  • Completed and passed the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course preferred, within one year of hire
  • Current and valid Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition & Stabilization (PEARS) required within 6-months of hire, unless another position held by the incumbent requires PALS. Employees hired prior to July 24, 2019 are required to obtain PEARS by July 24, 2020.

FIT FOR TRANSPORT DUTY:

  • Multiple physical activities performed at the same time (carrying multiple equipment while pushing the cot or incubator)
  • Adherence to Transport Fit for Duty policy

MEDICAL CONDITIONS:

  • Transport team members may not donate blood within 24 hours of a work shift
  • Any medical condition that may interfere with transport assignment must be reported to the Transport Patient Care manager
  • A signed statement from a personal physician must be submitted to the Transport PCM and Employee Health is a health condition develops that prevents the transport personnel from participating in the program
  • The pregnant transport person is not required to remain on active transport status any longer than she or her private physician feels she may safely do so. At 35 weeks gestation, the transport team member will not participate in transport
