GENERAL SUMMARY:  Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates professional nursing care to the student population in accordance with pediatric nursing standards and school policies and procedures. Care may be coordinated and delegated as appropriate to school personnel.

  1. Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of school nursing practice in appropriate time frames according to defined standards.
  • Collects and documents data related to the student’s physical, mental, emotional, and social condition and identified care.
  • Demonstrates age-specific competency in assessment of students by the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the student’s needs, knowledge of growth and development, and understanding of the range of treatments needed by students in the school setting.
  • Assesses student/family need for education and uses an individualized approach in delivery style.
  • Plans, performs, documents, refers, and follows up on state mandated screens as appropriate.

  1. Develops individualized student health plan using appropriate nursing diagnoses for specific student needs to meet identified needs.  Collaborates with the student, family, and/or staff and other appropriate disciplines or resources. (Individualizes refers to the student’s developmental, cognitive, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational/family influences and physical/medical care needs.)
  • Uses assessment data to individualize appropriate goals and actions for the student, including collaboration with the student, family,                school staff, and the healthcare team and their selected involvement in the student health care plan.
  • Uses individualized assessment data to develop the student/family’s plan of care.
  • Revises health plan/EAP based on student’s condition, interdisciplinary input, and family needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize student interventions based on assessments/reassessments.

  1. Implements nursing actions in accordance with the student’s health plan and student condition, while evaluating outcomes and revising plans as student needs dictate.
  • Oversees that the nursing and interdisciplinary health plan is coordinated, implemented, evaluated, and revised as needed.
  • Identifies the need for interdisciplinary involvement or other resources and follows through.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in administering interventions according to identified school health standards, hospital procedures, and age specific needs.
  • Assist students/families in identifying outside resources as appropriate to achieve clinical and educational outcomes.
  • Incorporates critical thinking into the delivery of clinical skill and in analyzing student response to medications and treatments.
  • Provides and/or coordinates with other school staff/healthcare team members, student/family education according to identified care needs, considering assessment of the student/family’s readiness to learn.

  1. Provides guidance regarding health issues of student populations.
  • Assesses, develops, implements, and evaluates health education programs for students and/or school staff, including, but not limited to Basic Life Support certification, First Aid, medication administration,  hand hygiene, and cover your cough, etc.
  • Provides health informational resources to school staff as requested.
  • Instructs, demonstrates, and validates staff in health care procedures related to individual student health needs.
  • Acts as a liaison between educational and medical personnel.
  • Participates in review of student/district health policies and provides recommendations  as needed.
  • Serves as a resource to health assistants as needed.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of school procedures for emergency medical situations.

 

Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required, preferably with pediatric patients

     

    CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current and valid certification as a Nebraska RN license/RN Compact license required
  • Current and valid certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Current and valid certification as a Basic Cardiac Life Support Instructor required, within 1 year of hire as requested by contracting school
