Job Description

Just like the children we serve, Children's is growing quickly and hiring a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst who develops reports, dashboards, universes and extracts from Children’s Hospital’s computer applications. Works with customers to develop monitoring tools to measure the impact of decision support. Researches, analyzes and corrects system and report problems. Works with various departments to define system requirements and implement new reports, dashboards, extracts or changes as needed. Experience with EPIC is preferred.

  1. Participates in requirements definition, application development and system selection activities to determine the best solutions to meet current and future business needs.

60%

Develop reports, dashboards, universes, and extracts for end users. Create data file dumps needed to support hospital alliances and third-party vendor applications, and write queries to be exported for decision makers in a timely manner.

  • Meet with customers to gain a better understanding of the business needs and collaboratively identify best practice solutions and define report requirements.
  • Have a clear understanding of the data and end user workflow in order to validate accurate results and reconcile discrepancies when necessary.
  • Monitor the performance of reports and take corrective action to optimize or improve the performance as problems arise.
  • Maintain scheduling application and rerun failed jobs as needed.
  • Document the development of all processes used in Production as well as the resolution of problems.
  • Participate in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned
  • Designs, implements and maintains agreed upon solutions such as alerts, dashboards, reports, and other business intelligence tools.
  • Perform report and query generation using SQL. 
  • Serve as an internal data consultant, participating in data integration discussions. 
  • Researches, analyzes and corrects system and user problems in a timely manner. 
  • Serves as liaison to expedite support issues between clients and vendors.
  • Conducts performance tests as necessary to ensure optimization. 
  • Revises existing BI solutions to correct problems and maintains effective data handling, conversion, and storage
  • Maintains and administers Business Objects Enterprise (BOE) systems, including installing, configuring; integrating, updating, programming, scheduling monitoring/maintaining system performance and administering security
  • Administers Epic hyperspace reporting tools Reporting Workbench and Radar
  • Works with the appropriate subject matter experts and other project team members in design, build, and validation sessions
  • Provides analytical and technical support for complex requests, projects or initiatives
  • Assists with full system integrated testing and "go-live" planning as well as ongoing testing and maintenance after "go-live"
  • Build and maintain KPI, Core Measures, Meaningful Use, Registries reporting
  • Act as a backup report writer resource to support other Epic modules
  • Facilitates the validation and testing of new or revised reports. Works with user to verify results and content, develops errors or exception reports when applicable and receives official user sign off on completed work
  • Tracks, documents, and facilitates resolution of all reporting technical issues. Keeps problem resolution log and proactively manages growth and utilization of analytic reporting products
  • Primary/Secondary responsibility for maintenance of all on-line production reports and associated user accounts used throughout the organization. Includes scheduling of reports, monitoring report updates from source files and notification of report availability and refresh schedule
  • Maintains a current complete list of all reports, dashboards, universe to include the purpose, main customer and owner
  • Deep understanding of Epic system build, end user workflows, and pattern of use; attain and maintain Epic certification(s) as determined by IT leadership and Epic Honor Role.

  1. BI system performance monitoring and tuning, downtime management and error log monitoring.  Monitor data integrity, report and assist in resolving data discrepancies between data warehouse and other sources.  Develops and maintains necessary documentation of implemented solutions.

  1. Participates in the evaluation of BI utilities and tools.  Coordinates application and integration configuration needs with other IT teams and customers.  Assists in the installation, configuration, and upgrades of BI software.  Defines backup and recovery procedures and ensures implementation of these procedures.
  2. Maintain small to medium data applications populated by Data Services, including system maintenance, upgrades, and extracts to internal or external customers.

  1. Assists in end user training and documentation
  2. Assist with the creation of and/or approve test plans.

  1. Develop internal best practices for data warehouse/BI administration, meta data management, and data modeling.  Understands and represents uniform data definitions for the enterprise.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Proficient in one or more of the following categories: 
    • Reporting tools such as Crystal Reports, Microsoft Report Services, or Jasper Reports
    • Business Intelligence tools such as QlikView, Cognos Business Intelligence, or Pentaho
  • Ability to read and navigate a database schema.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems analysis, user relations, and vendor interactions
  • Experience working in a Healthcare Information Technology related role within a hospital setting;
  • Designing and supporting relational databases including use of query techniques to access relational databases; Relational database concepts, including primary and foreign keys and joins Working knowledge of SQL (Structured Query Language).
  • Perform under stressful and changing circumstances; plan and implement objectives effectively; Design and communicate system solutions to client issues and problems of medium complexity;
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of the data model through data model classes geared toward specific Epic applications;
  • Determine data structures that benefit the entire reporting environment;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Establish effective work relations with those contacted in the course of business
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field required.
  • Minimum five years’ experience as a report writer, IT business Analyst, or related IT position required.
  • Experience with healthcare applications preferred
  • Experience in creating development plans and testing scenarios preferred
  • Experience with database scripting preferred.
