Job Description

Just like the patients we serve, Children's is growing quickly! We're hiring Surgical Technologists to perform a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related duties necessary to provide patient care in the Operating Room specialty service capacity.  Assist with surgical cases in all surgical specialties.

Essential Functions/Competencies

  1. Prepares the operating room by reviewing case cart and supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care
  • Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedure according to the physician’s preferences and the procedure
  • Inspects equipment for proper working condition
  • Maintain sterile practices when opening packages and preparing for the procedure
  • Prepare for specialty cases and maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements and techniques.
  • Participate in time out/sign out processes

  1. Maintains the sterile field during the procedure.
  • Follow principles of aseptic technique and appropriate operating/procedure room procedures following AORN guidelines.
  • Scrubs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon Practices sharps safety techniques (safety zone, safe passing)
  • Performs appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed
  •  
  • Prepares and labels  fluids and medications  on the sterile field
  • Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis

  1. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers
  • Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure.
  • Store and stock supplies as needed
  • Updates preference cards following each procedure to ensure appropriate supplies are available and communicates to service lead
  • Assist with OR patient care processes as directed by nursing and anesthesia
  • Participates in assigned on call activities.

 

Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist OR applicable surgical technologist course of study required.
  • Surg Tech II - Minimum two years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and/or competency in scrubbing in two or more surgical specialties as a Surgical Technologist required

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Current and valid Surgical Technologist certification preferred

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent call-back required
