Job Description

Just like the children we serve, Children's is growing and hiring a Lead Staff RN at our Creighton Clinic who provides direct and indirect nursing care based on established patient care protocol and the nursing process.  Coordinates clinical operations in the office in conjunction with the office managers and the physicians. Facilitates a team based approach to all patient care. Acts as a leader and mentor to staff and as a supervisor / liaison to the office manager when the office manager is in an alternate location.  Works at all times to promote teamwork within and among all CP locations.

  1. Performs treatments, procedures, and medication / immunization administration in a professional and compassionate manner according to Children’s Physicians policy and procedures.
  • Completes an accurate assessment of physical, mental, emotional, developmental and social conditions when interviewing all patients and families in the office and on the telephone.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of diagnostic tests and procedures with the patient /family, other physicians/hospitals and insurance providers as determined by the needs of the patient
  • Coordinates, provides, and appropriately documents patient and family education
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and provides care based on age-specific or developmental milestones for infants, toddlers, preschool, school age, and adolescents according to Children’s Physicians protocols
  • Completes all required patient care documentation in an accurate and timely manner within the electronic medical record according to Children’s Physicians policy and procedures.
  • Responds appropriately in crisis situations or life threatening emergencies
  • Directs other team members in the delivery of nursing care as determined by the needs of the office and the direction of the office manager or physicians.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and use of critical thinking skills when performing phone triage.
  • Fulfills expectation of complete and accurate phone documentation by utilizing EMR workflows as directed.  Returns phone calls within determined response time ranges.
  • Promotes and encourages use of Children’s Connect by communicating with parents via online portal whenever feasible.
  • Takes ownership of quality metrics as a reflection of our commitment to continuously improving the quality of care for all patients. Works quality reports as directed, utilizing appropriate established workflows.
  • Maintains clean and professional appearance of exam rooms at all times.
  • Attends required meetings and educational sessions as directed.  Attends lead nurse meeting as directed and communicates all follow up information to staff.  Works at all times to promote teamwork within and among all CP locations.


  1. Acts as a resource and mentor to clinical staff in responsibilities listed above, delegates tasks appropriately.
  • Leads collaboration between front and back office to ensure optimal functioning of the clinic. Functions as part of leadership team with manager, lead receptionist and physicians.
  • Provides input on and participates in staff evaluations, counseling and progressive discipline.  
  • Prepares, maintains and monitors clinical staff schedule to assure appropriate coverage and avoid unnecessary overtime.  Manages daily staffing to flex with patient volumes, supporting other offices as needed. Covers for other leads as needed. Collaborates with Lead Receptionist to coordinate for physician vacations.
  • Provides oversight for lab operations in conjunctions with Lab Director. Maintains up to date knowledge and compliance with laboratory standards and guidelines as directed. 
  • Ensures that vaccine, supply and linen inventories are appropriately maintained by staff as directed.  Responsible for maintenance of emergency cart as delegated.
  • Assists the office manager in monitoring staff compliance with Children’s Physicians and regulatory agency policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for orientation and ongoing training of new and existing nursing staff.  Provides education to staff as directed by management team, quality metrics coordinator, medical director and operations director.
  • Ensures that quality metrics reports are worked and turned in within assigned timeframes.


Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

  • Excellent skills in communication, listening, customer service, organization.
  • Excellent clinical skills providing direct and indirect nursing care in an office setting.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
  • Ability to type, navigate an electronic system, and adapt to changes in workflows as they occur.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing preferred
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a healthcare setting required.
  • Previous pediatric nursing experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with EPIC preferred.


  • Current and valid RN license for the state of Nebraska/or Compact license required.
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association is required.
  • Current and valid Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition & Stabilization (PEARS) required within 6-months of hire, unless another position held by the incumbent requires PALS. Employees hired prior to July 24, 2019 are required to obtain PEARS by July 24, 2020.
  • Certification in nursing specialty is preferred.


  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) may be preferred based on clinic location.
