Job Description

Just like the children we serve, Children's is growing quickly and hiring a Clinical Manager who develops, supports, and monitors nursing care practices for the cardiac population throughout the organization.  Is a resource to provide direction, expertise, decisions, resources, and leadership to ensure nurse competency throughout the inpatient units to provide continuous growth in cardiac care.  This is accomplished through the appropriate horizontal and vertical direct communication with all departments, outside facilities, and other disciplines as appropriate. Serves as the practice leader/advocate to accomplish organizational and department strategic goals and objectives.  Gives input to the Director in the development of the annual departmental budget, staffing needs and care models.  Ensures administration of high-quality, age-specific patient care, including functioning as a clinical resource and role model.  Monitors the effectiveness/efficiency of area systems to support the delivery of quality patient care, implementing changes as necessary.  Promotes growth and development of area staff, serving as a mentor and coach.  Functions as a communication bridge between staff and administration.

  1. Responsible for the overall management and coordination for the cardiac nurses including staff scheduling and reporting system in order to maximize resources and utilization.
  • In times of high census, effectively problem solves and utilizes other unit CNs/CMs/Director as needed, to maximize resources to continue patient flow, while maintaining quality patient care.
  • Utilizes clinical leadership in ensuring that patient care activities meet established unit/organizational/practices standards of care through patient/family rounding, communication with healthcare team and in directing and/or assisting in the delivery of clinical patient care.
  • Facilitates communication between healthcare team members/departments in advocating for quality/coordinated patient care and ensuring that patient family needs are met.
  • Works collaboratively with unit clinical managers to ensure that staffing is appropriate for cardiac patients throughout the organization and takes into account projected needs for the current week.
  • Oversees, redistributes and provides direction for inpatient cardiac staffing to reflect current/projected patient/family needs, acuities, and staff skill mix according to the staffing/scheduling/cancellation procedure guidelines.
  • Serves as an administrative liaison between patients/families and the health care team to address escalated care/systems concerns, ensuring that concerns are elevated through the chain of command, up to and including administrator on-call, until resolved. 
  • Demonstrates exemplary customer service skills and leadership in problem solving with outside agencies/customers to assist them as needed regarding Children’s services.
  • Responsible for the professional development of the cardiac nursing staff including identifying areas of opportunity for improvement and making recommendations and changes to policies and procedures as necessary.

  1. Assures the daily personnel, equipment, and technology resources necessary for the provision of safe, high quality patient and family care.
  • Assures the continuous and timely availability of emergency, inpatient, and operative services to patients and families.
  • Continuously monitors daily operations integrating data from electronic systems, personal communication, and physical unit rounds to assure patient care effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction.
  • Assures the safety and quality of patient care by allocating and redirecting resources, considering care demands related to acuity, patient and unit requirements, and staff skill mix.
  • Coordinates the routine flow of scheduled, direct, and emergency patient admissions to efficiently place patients in the appropriate care location, maximize capacity, and improve satisfaction of patients, families, and referring providers.
  • Coordinates the organizational response during times of high census: collaborating with directors, clinical managers, supervisors, clinical nursing, physicians, and leadership from ancillary services departments.

 

Personnel Management

  • Selects/hires employees and trains and/or oversees the training on job related tasks.
  • Conducts employee performance management duties including completion and delivery of performance evaluations, setting goals, dissemination of information, coaching, addressing performance issues/routine correction actions, and recommending termination of employment.
  • Makes salary recommendations.
  • Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations).
  • Makes recommendations for human resource needs.

 

Operational/Financial Management

  • Makes decisions guided by the business plan and resource availability that impacts service levels and the team’s ability to meet objectives.
  • Analyzes processes and procedures and makes recommendations and/or decisions on guidelines for daily processes/activities within department. Recommend policy changes related to the department. Implements new or revised policies, processes, and procedures within the work area.
  • Assists in the director in the development of the annual budget; monitors and prepares budget variance reports for the department. 
  • Applies business and management expertise to identify problems/opportunities, determine solutions, and measure results.
  • Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety practices, policies, regulatory, and legal requirements.

  1. Responsible for providing resources for clinical and support staff in decision making that facilitates safe, high quality patient care.
  • Applies knowledge of regulatory standards, professional practice standards, and organizational policies and procedures to problem solving.
  • Provides education, guidance, and assistance with unfamiliar procedures and policies; while assisting staff to identify resources for information and assistance.
  • Promotes a professional culture of learning consistent with successful adaptation to change and innovation by actively seeking and sharing information.
  • Participates in organizational committees in order to both represent inter-department perspectives and contribute to organizational improvement efforts.
  • Makes a measurable commitment to personal professional development (conferences, leadership seminars, hospital leadership educational offerings).
  • Schedules and administers the performance evaluations for staff.
  • Ensure staff is providing good customer service according to departmental and company standards.
  • Provide direction, system expertise, decisions, resource and leadership to ensure uninterrupted department operations. 
  • Creates an environment that fosters high individual and team engagement by demonstrating service excellence, effective conflict resolution, leading by example, and developing staff through clinical and supervisory expertise.
  • Demonstrates professional development and leadership related to the role and the role’s direct/indirect impact within the assigned department and hospital wide.
  • Ensure assigned staff is maintaining the standards of care and licensure requirements in a timely and accurate manner required by Children’s Hospital & Medical center.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must possess leadership skills in verbal/written communication and organizational management (time management, problem solving, conflict resolution, and knowledge of regulatory agency/HR standards).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing required
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or health care administration preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a progressive leadership role in nursing required, preferably in a pediatric environment
  • Previous Pediatric Cardiac Experience Preferred

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current and valid Nebraska RN license/RN Compact license required
  • Current and valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Current and valid certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required
  • Current and valid Certified Nursing Management and Leaders (CMNL) or Nurse Executive- Board Certified (NE-BC) certification preferred

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Has 24-hour accountability for assigned inpatient areas and staff
  • Non-Violent Intervention (NVI) Training is required every two years
