Job Description

Just like the children we serve, Children's is growing quickly and hiring a Pediatric Sonographer in our Ultrasound department.  As a pediatric sonographer you will facilitate quality patient care by performing ultrasound exams and relationed functions as requested.

1.        Performs routine ultrasound examinations as requested by physician to facilitate diagnosis in accordance with department procedure manual and initial patient assessment to include the following:

         Room preparation to include supplies, equipment set-up, immobilization devices; isolation procedure requirements; and sterile technique if warranted.

         Patient/Parent education to allay apprehension and elicit cooperation during the exam. Obtains clinical history of patient's condition.

         Calculates and selects proper technical factors and probes based on patients age, physical condition and suspected pathology.

         Processing sonographic images and evaluating them for technical quality.

         Preparing films for interpretation by the Radiologist, recording pertinent patient data and pulling previous exams. Maintaining department log of exams performed for teaching file purposes.

         Educates the patient and family regarding the examination process.

         Provides caring responses to family questions.

         Excels in service excellence from the patient and familys perspective.

2.        Performs a variety of functions in support of the department to enhance the overall experience for patients and families

         Performs professional, clinical instruction of students by performing and monitoring "on-the-job training" as outlined by JRCERT.

         Keeps current regarding developments, trends, and techniques in ultrasound procedures and equipment, as necessary to maintain expertise, through appropriate journals, conferences and seminars. Attends department meetings.

         Maintains proper functioning of equipment by scanning the acoustic test phantom monthly, scheduling PM's quarterly, and requesting service as needed to keep downtime to a minimum

         Transports patients to and from the department to facilitate timely completion of patient exams as needed, in accordance with established department procedure.

         Maintains work area in a clean and orderly fashion in order to comply with infection control regulations and to present a professional look to patients and families by disinfecting room and probes after each patient use; restocking supplies if necessary, and good hand washing.

         Performs clerical tasks maintaining continuity of patient exams by retrieving and filing films and reports, answering phones and relaying messages, etc.

 

Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

         Demonstrates the analytical abilities necessary to resolve technical problems to produce optimal scans

         Exhibits Interpersonal skills necessary to counsel and comfort patients and families regarding procedures.

 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

         Associates degree from an accredited AMA approved school of Sonography required, candidates may be considered if within six months of graduating.

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

         Must be A.R.D.M.S. or board eligible, and pass the registry within one year of the completion of training required.

         Current and valid certification in Abdomen is required within one year of graduation.

         Additional certification in Neuro is required within two years of hire.

         Additional certification in Vascular is preferred.

 Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
