Essential Functions/Competencies

In collaboration with physicians and other members of the health care team, assesses patient, synthesizes and analyzes data, orders diagnostic tests and therapeutic treatments, and evaluates clinical outcomes. Comprehensive care of the patient includes assessment, diagnosis, development of a treatment plan and implementation of an individualized plan of care.

  • Completes an accurate assessment (history and physical examination) of the pediatric patient.
  • Synthesizes and analyzes data obtained through assessment to develop a comprehensive plan of care that is individualized and reflects patient care needs and includes interventions and treatments to attain expected outcomes using evidence based medicine concepts
  • Implements plan with appropriate treatment orders.
  • Evaluates and revises plan as indicated by changes in patient condition or needs.
  • Communicates medical plan to caregivers, staff members, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team..
  • Demonstrates proper use of laboratory and x-ray to assist in diagnosis and interprets results correctly.
  • Demonstrates understanding of caregiver dynamics involved in the ill pediatric patient.
  • Meets the development and psychosocial needs of the pediatric patient/caregiver.
  • Assesses the educational needs of patients/caregivers and develops/implements the educational plan in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.


Prescribes therapeutic measures and medications according to the State of Nebraska APRN-Nurse Practitioner statutes.  Performs select invasive procedures, as approved in his/her individualized Scope of Service, according to the Children’s Hospital & Medical Center credentialing policy.

  • Demonstrates competency in principles of medication dosing and mechanism of action as it relates to specific diagnoses.

  • Orders and/or administers medication according to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center policy, procedure, and scope of practice.

          • Maintains accurate log of credentialed procedures performed. Demonstrates knowledge and expertise when performing  

        credentialed procedures/specialty skills, independently or with another healthcare provider


Uses sound medical/clinical judgment during care for the pediatric patient including consultation/collaboration with hospitalist physicians and other healthcare providers, use of clinical guidelines, and documentation of assessment, interventions, and patient response to treatment. Documentation reflects assessment/evaluation, modification, and patient’s response to treatments, changes in condition, and interventions/procedures.


Assumes leadership role to establish and monitor standards of practice to improve patient care including recommending ways to improve clinical practice, participation in related educational activities, utilizes and/or participates in research, participation in professional organizations and performance improvement teams, and incorporation of new clinical information into practice.

  • Serves as a role model for staff by facilitating, supporting, mentoring, taking initiative, and practicing proactive problem solving.
  • Serves as a reliable and visible resource for staff.
  • Conducts or utilizes research and new clinical information to recommend ways to improve clinical practice.
  • Participates in educational activities and networking related to practice.
  • Seeks experiences and learning opportunities related to practice.
  • Participates in professional organizations.
  • Serves on Performance Improvement teams as needed.
  • Assures that clinical practice meets national standards of pediatric healthcare.

  • Satisfy all relevant criteria and qualifications outlined in the Medical Staff Policy on Allied Health Professional, required to be credentialed
  • Practice within framework of respective scope of practice
  • Knowledge of physical, mental, developmental, emotional and social needs of the neonate, infant, toddler, pre-school, school age and adolescent patients
  • Maintains current knowledge and skill level in field through reading appropriate journals, networking, and attendance at conferences or seminars
  • Ability to communicate effectively


  • Master’s or Doctorate Degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP) from accredited college or university required



  • Current and valid unrestricted license as a registered nurse and as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse-Nurse Practitioner in the State of Nebraska required
  • Maintain active Federal DEA License required
  • Current and valid nationally recognized nurse practitioner certification required – CPNP-AC, or CPNP-PC.  Pediatric board certification preferred.  Acute care certification required.
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Current and valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required, within six months of hire



  • An Advanced Practice Nurse who does not have a master’s degree or two thousand (2,000) hours of supervised practice will be required to maintain a state-approved Transition-to-Practice agreement with supervising provider, which shall guide the nurse practitioner’s practice
