Ready to begin your career as a pediatric Clinic RN?  Children’s paid RN Residency Program for Ambulatory Clinic Nursing assists new BSN graduate nurses in their transition from student to professional RN.  This program offers nurses clinical experience in the Children’s Specialty Pediatric Center Clinics:  Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Orthopedics, Pulmonary, Clinic Flex team and the Children’s Physician offices.  This highly supportive program provides new grads a great opportunity to explore several options within Children’s ambulatory nursing areas before matching to an available position. Once a clinic is selected, the resident gains confidence and expertise by continuing with clinic-specific orientation. The experiences during Children’s pediatric nurse residency program culminate in eligibility for national certification as a pediatric nurse.

Essential Functions/Competencies

  1. Completes accurate, holistic, and age-specific assessments and documentation of physical, mental, emotional, developmental and social conditions with all patients and families in the ambulatory setting and while doing telephone triage according to defined standards.
  2. Involves caregivers in the assessment and continuous care or treatment of the patient, while meeting caregiver expectations during their ambulatory visit.
  3. Communicates plan of care to the patient/caregiver(s).
  4. Works collaboratively with the health care team to care for patients and caregivers in the ambulatory setting.
  5. Performs treatments, procedures, and medication administration in a professional and compassionate manner according to patient care policies and procedures.
  6. Demonstrates knowledge of and provides care based on age-specific or developmental milestones for infants, toddlers, preschool, school age, and adolescents.
  7. Considers cultural, cognitive, emotional, and social influences on the patient/caregiver’s ability and readiness to learn.
  8. Facilitates timely communication with patients, caregivers and other healthcare disciplines; answers patient care related questions, requests, etc. 
  9. Coordinates, provides, and appropriately documents patient and family education. 
  10. Completes all required patient care documentation in an accurate and timely manner within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), according to policy and procedures.
  11. Coordinates the scheduling of diagnostic tests and procedures for patients.
  12. Maintain up-to-date knowledge, compliance and competency with laboratory standards and guidelines as directed. 
  13. Follows up on test and lab results, within established time frames. 
  14. Delegates to other team members in the delivery of care as determined by scopes of services.
  15. Demonstrates proficiency and use of critical thinking skills when performing telephone triage and communicating through Children’s Connect.
  16. Promotes and encourages the use of Children’s Connect, by communicating with caregivers via online portal whenever feasible.
  17. Fulfills expectation of complete and accurate telephone documentation by utilizing EMR workflows as directed.  Returns telephone calls and Children’s Connect messages within determined response time ranges.
  18. Assists providers in the ambulatory setting to maintain an efficient workflow and patient experience.
  19. Responds appropriately in crisis situations or life threatening emergencies.
  20. Takes ownership of quality metrics as a reflection of our commitment to continuously improving the quality of care for all patients. Works with quality reports as directed, utilizing appropriate established workflows.


  1. Actively engages in Nurse Residency Program through consistent participation in classroom and preceptor learning activities.
  • Attends scheduled residency classroom sessions and activities within first 6 weeks.
  • Completes assigned verbal and written learning activities at defined due dates.
  • Consistently participates in group discussion and reflection activities.
  • Provides constructive feedback on Nurse Residency Program.
  • Accepts constructive feedback from preceptor and residency staff.
  • Professional supports assignment to home unit during Match Day activity.
  • Engages in regular collaboration with assigned mentor throughout first year of employment.
  • Completes/conducts EBP/PI project by end of year two of employment and presents results to defined group.


Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

  • Excellent skills in communication, listening, customer service, organization
  • Excellent clinical skills providing direct and indirect nursing care in an office setting
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills
  • Ability to type, navigate an electronic system, and adapt to changes in workflows as they occur


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing required
  • Experience with pediatric patients preferred
  • Previous experience with EPIC preferred



  • Current valid Nebraska RN license/RN compact license required
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
