Job Description

Just like the children we serve, Children's is growing quickly and searching for a Laboratory Point of Care Coordinator who is responsible for technical oversight of point of care testing and works collaboratively with nursing personnel in the implementation, maintenance, trouble-shooting and execution of process improvement for POSCT programs. Develop and maintain a quality management system that assures quality and meets applicable regulatory requirements. Coordinate and participate in required instrument calibration verification, linearity checks, other periodic instrument function checks, instrument maintenance, and reviews such data with the Medical Director.  Develop and maintain written policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory requirements.


Essential Functions/Competencies

  1. Coordinates the implementation of new location POCT tests, equipment, and testing methods. 
  • Participates in the decisions and evaluation of POCT in new locations. 
  • Coordinates appropriate comparative studies for the evaluation of proposed POCT systems including precision and accuracy. 
  • Develops, maintains, and executes appropriate training and competency testing for all testing personnel.


  1. Maintains and evaluates the quality and performance of established POCT programs. 
  • Develops and maintains POCT procedures. 
  • Implements, reviews, and monitors appropriate comprehensive proficiency testing and quality control programs to assure accuracy and validity of results. 
  • Prepares appropriate reports to communicate, document and maintain these programs. 
  • Performs onsite rounds to review POCT activities and provides ongoing feedback to testing personnel. 
  • Meets applicable regulatory requirement, and maintains program certification and inspections including CAP and TJC.


  1. Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory instruments.
  • Reviews QC and testing records, performance reports, and documented corrective actions from testing locations as defined. 
  • Performs any maintenance and function checks on assigned instruments as prescribed by the manufacturer and laboratory procedure manuals. 
  • Performs unscheduled maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs indicated. 
  • Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly. 
  • Maintains proper records of all maintenance and checks performed. 
  • Verifies instrument calibration as indicated by the manufacturer and lab procedure manuals. 
  • Maintains open dialog with staff at testing locations, working to identify and resolve POCT issues. 
  • Inventories, replenishes and submits orders for supplies as appropriate.


  1. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians and students. 
  • Assists physicians, nursing personnel, outpatient staff on test requirements, procedures, and availability of laboratory testing. 
  • Communicates relevant information and enhances professional growth and development through education, conferences and seminars. 
  • Evaluates user competency and test performance according to CLIA regulations. 
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new testing systems and those in place. 
  • Makes recommendations and works with IT and the LIS Coordinator to facilitate process. 
  • Serves as CLIA Technical Consultant and as liaison with the federal government and accrediting bodies.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related field, including a one-year internship in an approved clinical laboratory required
  • Two years’ experience in Core Lab as a Medical Technologist required


  • Current and valid certification as a Medical Technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathology or other equivalent certified agency required
