GENERAL SUMMARY:  Serves as the practice leader/advocate for PICU in order to accomplish organizational and department al strategic goals and objectives.  Coordinates services and provides leadership for designated area.  Has 24-hour accountability for assigned area(s).  Works under the supervision of the Vice President – Patient Care & CNO.  Has 24-hour accountability for assigned inpatient areas and staff.  Responsible for the day-to-day operations of their assigned area.  Gives input into development of, and monitors compliance with annual area budget.  Ensures administration of high-quality, age-specific patient care, including functioning as a clinical resource for the area, and a clinical role model.  Monitors the effectiveness/efficiency of area systems to support the delivery of quality patient care, implementing changes as necessary.  Maintains adequate area staff to meet the identified needs of the patient and area.  Promotes growth and development of area staff, serving as a mentor and coach.  Functions as a communication bridge between staff and administration.  Accountable for developing, supporting and monitoring area, departmental and administrative goals.  Serves as a mentor and coach for the Clinical Nurse Coordinator.

  1. Performs in a leadership role to promote smooth operational flow of the hospital/unit with 24-hour accountability.

    • Evaluates the clinical knowledge and skills of individual staff in a timely, positive, fair manner, and coaches to staff.
    • Promotes an environment that fosters professional and personal growth of staff.
    • Manages time effectively, sets priorities, and delegates duties appropriately.
    • Contributes to the changes and improvement of patient care practices.
    • Participates in Shared Governance.
    • Plans area budget.
    • Utilizes disciplinary process effectively.
    • Monitors progress of orientees/preceptors.
    • Monitors variances in labor/expense/budget reports.
    • Maintains systems to provide adequate supplies and equipment to area.
    • Supports decisions of management team with staff.
    • Accepts and utilizes feedback to develop new goals for individual/unit growth and development.

 

  1. Personnel Management
  • Selects/hires employees and trains and/or oversees the training on job related tasks.
  • Conducts employee performance management duties including completion and delivery of performance evaluations, setting goals, dissemination of information, coaching, addressing performance issues/routine correction actions, and recommending termination of employment.
  • Makes salary recommendations.
  • Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations).
  • Makes recommendations for human resource needs.

 

Operational/Financial Management

  • Responsible for the implementation and execution of business plans or activities for the department.  May assist in the development of business plans.
  • Makes decisions guided by the business plan and resource availability that impacts service levels and the team’s ability to meet objectives.
  • Analyzes processes and procedures and makes recommendations and/or decisions on guidelines for daily processes/activities within department.  May recommend policy changes related to the department.  Implements new or revised policies, processes, and procedures within the work area.
  • Develops the annual budget, monitors and prepares budget variance reports for the department. 
  • Applies business and management expertise to identify problems/opportunities, determine solutions, and measure results.
  • Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety practices, policies, regulatory, and legal requirements.

  1. Serves as a clinical role model for area staff.
  • Role models and is a resource for age specific patient care delivery.
  • Readily responds to unit/staffing needs and is accessible, and willingly accepts changes in responsibilities.
  • Keeps abreast of area activities and provides resources as necessary.
  • Maintains shift operational flow of the area.
  • Deals effectively with patient and family concerns, facilitating a multi-disciplinary team approach

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must possess leadership skills including communication/organizational skills, time management, coping skills, motivation, problem-solving, autonomy and supporting the team.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing required.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing preferred
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a progressive leadership role in nursing required, preferably in a pediatric environment including 2 years management or lead experience preferred.

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current and valid license as a Registered Nurse in state of NE/Compact state required
  • Current and valid certification in relevant specialty area preferred.
  • Certification as a Nurse manager/Leader (CNML) or Nurse Executive ( CNE) held or obtained within six months or hire preferred.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) required to work
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
