Job Description


GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides clinical and operational leadership for the Cardiac Care Unit to ensure high quality care coordination and operational systems.  In collaboration with the medical directors of Cardiac Care Unit.  Standardizes and delivers high quality of clinical care and outcomes.  Works collaboratively with other hospital, physician and nursing leaders to create cohesive, quality driven services to the cardiac care patients.

Defines operational standards, organizes department-level activities to achieve optimum service delivery/systems/care/processes, setting high performance objectives for the department.  Holds self and others accountable to meet stated objectives, outcomes, goals, timetables and commitments, adhering to standards even in the face of unforeseen circumstances.


  1. Direct and implement the Patient Services Strategic Plan aligned with Children’s Hospital & Medical Center strategic plan specifically for the Cardiac Care Unit.
  2. Works in partnership with physician leaders to promote cohesive, coordinated and innovative program development inclusive of developing, articulating, and implementing a shared vision and operational plan for the cardiac care unit.
  • Determine avenues to improve the value of care and services.
  • Direct and provide leadership maintaining employee’s personal development and providing management development and coaching for members of team.
  • Represent Children’s and promote clinical profession by participating in professional activities at the state, local, and national level through involvement in professional associations and organizations and  participates in community service initiatives.
  • Develop and oversee the Cardiac Care Unit’s goals, standards, policies, procedures and practices of clinical care, implementing and monitoring indicators of quality to ensure quality patient care outcomes.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary management and medical directors to plan, implement, and evaluate services.
  • Promote both internal and external customer service through the development and implementation of programs and standards which reflect that goal.
  • Assures high quality of care in the Cardiac Care Unit by close monitoring of departmental productivity measures



Operational/Financial Management

  • Participates in the development and implementation of strategic objectives for the unit.
  • Develops and implements business plans for the department that support the goals and strategies of the organization.
  • Defines and approves processes and procedures within the department.
  • Develops and recommends policies related to the operational or functional area.
  • Develops the annual budget for the operational or functional area including human resource needs.  Prepares budget variance reports and develops corrective strategies to meet the area’s operational or financial plan.
  • Applies business and management expertise to set direction, measure results, resolve problems, and achieve operational and financial objectives.
  • Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety practices, policies, regulatory, and legal requirements.
  • Meet or exceed yearly goals for vacancy and turnover rate.


  1. Oversee financial accountability for annual operating and capital expenditures budgets specific to designated areas and company wide.
  • Meet yearly goals for contribution margin, percent variance from budget and overtime rate. 
  • Assure efficiencies in staffing and resource utilization by comparison with internal and external benchmarks as measured by productivity units appropriate for areas managed.
  • Provide oversight in the development and maintenance of systems to capture all charges. 
  • Research and develop opportunities for revenue development for all services. 
  • Coordinate and approve purchasing requisitions and oversee the monitoring of inventory for the department; review service and maintenance contracts. 
  • Oversee, prepare, coordinate, evaluate and manage annual fiscal operating and capital equipment budgets for assigned areas, evaluate and manage operating revenue/expense variances monthly and prepare written reports. 
  • Develop methods for fiscal analysis, conduct financial and quantitative analysis and monitor existing or proposed programs and services

  • Uses business analytics to monitor and improve department effectiveness, efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Assure continual readiness for regulatory compliance. 
  • Ensure high level of customer service, including family centered initiatives. 
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of evidence based practice and quality efforts. 
  • Monitor and ensure timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information. 
  • Determine and enforce policies and procedures protecting patient rights for informed consent and the handling of confidential information as defined by the Medical center’s mission and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Enforce compliance with Infection control policies and procedures.

Takes personal responsibility to adhere to department/organization  policies and  procedures, compliance and regulatory agency requirements


  • Leads staff in emergency situations (i.e. CPR, internal/external disaster, disruptive individuals, Code Adam).
  • Develops, reviews, revises and implements policies and procedures on an ongoing basis, to assure departments consistency and compliance with hospital standards and accrediting bodies including:  Joint Commission, OSHA, HIPAA, Infection Control, Environment of Care, National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Manages staff in addressing non-compliance with standards and develops an action plan as necessary.
  • Administers policies, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions with consistency and without regard to personal agendas or beliefs.
  • Ensures self and staff meet department/ organization job requirements within established time frames (i.e. licensure/certification, CPR for direct care providers, physicals, annual mandatory reviews, participates and physically attends 75% of required staff meetings).
  • Keeps abreast of department/organization policies/regulations, as well as industry knowledge through technical publications, newsletters, personal networks and professional affiliations.

  • Bachelor’s from an accredited College or University in Nursing required
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in nursing including three years' leadership required.
  • Experience in pediatric cardiology strongly preferred



  • Current and valid license as a Registered Nurse in state of NE/Compact state required
  • Certification as Nurse Executive (NE-BC or NEA-BC)  required within one year of hire
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required to work
