Ability to read in order to interpret type and level of patient care ordered, to write in order to record procedures performed, to understand and follow instructions relating to basic patient care, and to perform simple arithmetic calculations in order to take and record patients' weight and vital signs. This education is normally acquired by completion of at least two years of high school.
State of Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant certification required. Additional unit-specific knowledge is obtained through orientation, checklists and competency testing.
Basic Life Support required within 60 days of hire.
Approximately one month on-the-job experience necessary to gain knowledge of basic patient care procedures, to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of unit procedures and schedules, and to appropriately operate computer charting system.
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to exchange factual information with patients, visitors, and nursing personnel in a courteous manner, and to allay apprehensions of patients and visitors.
Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for up to 30% of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
Analytical skills necessary in order to organize work, gather and interpret routine data regarding patient assessments, transports, and maintain routine records.
