Part-Time English Language and Literature Summer Instructor

AIM is seeking a qualified English instructor for our Upward Bound program as part of our 2019 Summer Academy. The ideal candidate will have a professional and academic background in education and has experience with teen youth.

The Upward Bound (UB) program is a federally funded grant program that provides fundamental support to underrepresented high school students to increase the rate at which participants succeed in secondary and postsecondary education and pursue rewarding tech-enabled careers. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.

The Upward Bound programs at AIM Institute serve students from Abraham Lincoln, Omaha Bryan, Papillion-LaVista, Papillion LaVista-South and Thomas Jefferson high schools. AIM Institute is seeking a variety of part-time instructors for its 5-week UB summer program to occur at AIM Institute in Omaha, NE.

Duties

  • Create and implement CREATIVE, ENERGETIC and ENGAGING subject specific curriculum aligned with 5 specified weekly themes
  • Teach alternating English Language and Literature classes to high school participants from 9th to 12th grades to keep their skills in use during summer, as well as prepare them for their English Language and Literature curriculum in the following year
  • Attend paid training with the AIM Curriculum Coordinator 8am-12pm from 6/3/19 to 6/5/19
  • Develop and submit all supplies and equipment lists by 6/5/19 to the Curriculum Coordinator
  • Develop and submit all lesson and assessment plans by 6/7/19 to the Curriculum Coordinator (paid one hour pay for each week’s lesson plans)
  • Be a positive and available role model to students as they develop their confidence and motivation to succeed, despite the challenges faced by students in this program
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Certified teacher in the state of Nebraska or Iowa
  • High school or college teaching experience
  • Must be able to teach a mixed ability class of English Language and Literature.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written) skills
  • Demonstrate the motivation to work with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrate patience in working with teens, and have a genuine ability to connect with teens
  • Possess discretion, sound judgment, and solid decision making skills.
  • Be sensitive to the needs of diverse and disadvantaged populations
  • Deliver engaging and age appropriate instruction that keep youth intellectually curious, interested and focused
  • Be adaptable and flexible regarding scheduling to meet programming needs.

  • Must be able to travel to and from Omaha, NE
  • Must be available to commit to teach classes from 6/10/19 - 7/19/19; No classes 7/1/19-7/5/19
  • Must be available between the hours of 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, Monday – Wednesday
  • Must be able to teach two to four (depending on size of participating group) 60-minute classes each of these 3 days a week
