Position Purpose

Direct and manage all related activity in support of Solutions carrier Capacity Management needs (all modes) to support all Solutions’ service mix offering.  Capacity Management includes activities related to vetting and on boarding new carriers, ongoing carrier relationship management, carrier contract management, rate negotiations management, regulatory compliance management, administration of the Preferred Asset Carrier (PAC) program and ensuring adequate capacity/service for all required modes of transportation.  Work with other Solutions leadership team members to ensure that Capacity Management performance goals are accomplished. Lead the effort to develop the Capacity Management team to ensure consistently high levels of performance and results. Support the EVP/COO in the execution of activity to support accomplishment of overall Solutions strategy and objectives.

Position Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the Solutions Capacity Management team is appropriately staffed (right number of personnel, required skills and relevant experience).  Coach and develop all Solutions Capacity Management personnel to enable consistently high levels of performance results.  Perform bi-annual performance evaluation reviews.
  • Manage the development and ongoing execution of an effective new hire on boarding program for Capacity Management team members.  Ensure that ongoing training needs for new hires and current personnel are provided for in an effective and timely manner.
  • Direct and manage the development of structured and disciplined business processes to facilitate consistently high levels of performance (timely carrier on boarding, carriers meeting performance expectations, purchased transportation targets, carrier compliance to regulatory requirements, etc.).  Manage the execution of all related Capacity Management processes to optimize productivity and results.
  • Coordinate the selection of and manage the use of appropriate technology to ensure that the Solutions Capacity Management team is able to perform at consistently high levels (TMS, SRM, etc.).  Ensure appropriate and adequate training to new hires and current personnel to optimize productivity levels and performance results.
  • Develop an appropriate mix of metrics to ensure the Solutions Carrier Capacity activity is effectively managed for all service mix offerings.  Manage the use of leading and lag metrics with a focus on exception management.  Ensure the use of “big data” to thoroughly and regularly analyze activity in order to identify opportunities for improvement (better service, lower cost, improved customer value, enhanced carrier compliance, etc.).
  • Support Solutions Capacity Management managers and team members in the execution and performance of their respective responsibilities.  Provide positive and constructive feedback on a regular basis.  Address performance issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Manage the ongoing vetting and onboarding of carriers/providers to provide the necessary capacity and service performance levels to enable Solutions execution success in meeting customer expectations.  This includes use of ITS and other resources to ensure that carriers/providers maintain their eligibility requirements to be a Solutions provider.
  • Proactively and regularly reach out to key carrier/provider stakeholders to ensure satisfaction with Solutions interaction, value proposition and/or to address performance issues.  Maintain effective relationships with all key carriers/providers to help facilitate long term success for all parties.  Oversee periodic performance reviews of all carriers/providers to ensure accomplishment of expected performance levels. 
  • Manage the procurement of capacity and rates for all Solutions service mix offerings including contracts, contract renewals, rate negotiations, securing capacity, setting Solutions performance expectations (on time, shipment visibility, etc.), and other related activity.
  • Participate in and/or attend relevant industry events that offer an opportunity to further Capacity Management’s strategy and strengthen carrier relationships, i.e. TIA, Food Shippers, NASTC, etc.  Identify and facilitate participation in other appropriate industry groups, i.e. SmartWay, Truckers Against Trafficking, etc
  • Manage the ongoing regulatory environment (FMCSA, FDA, etc.) as it applies to current and pending compliance matters that could impact Solutions access to reliable cost effective transportation capacity, including changes that will/may impact Solutions carrier’s ability to service our needs.  Ensure that Solutions is proactively positioned to have its carriers in compliance by or on the applicable compliance date of new regulations or that replacement capacity has been arranged to cover any expected gaps.  Provide periodic updates to Solutions Senior Leadership Team (SLT) regarding new and pending regulations and the expected implications for Solutions’ business.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other Solutions functional areas and CTG sales to ensure timely and effective responses to new business opportunities, RFPs, bids, special projects and peak season.   Provide leadership and direction in regard to Solutions pricing, capacity and service procurement to align with each opportunity.
  • Provide periodic updates to the SLT on the state of the transportation industry (all modes) including but not limited to recent regulatory changes, implications of regulatory changes, demographic changes, customer industry vertical changes, rate trends (all modes), etc.
  • Support the EVP/COO in the preparation of the annual Solutions budget.  Work closely to ensure that monthly Capacity Management budget targets are consistently being met.  Initiate and collaborate to identify and effect improvement actions to ensure performance to financial targets.
  • Be available 24/7 to help resolve issues or address critical business situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the EVP/COO

Position Requirements

4 Year Degree Preferred – Business, Supply Chain, Logistics or Finance

10+ Years Transportation/Logistics/Supply Chain Industry Experience

5+ Years Managing and Developing Personnel

Multi Modal Experience Preferred - TL, LTL, Intermodal, Parcel, International

Experience with transportation procurement and/or operations (as a shipper or 3PL preferred)

Proficiency with Technology Systems – Microsoft Office, Outlook, TMS, etc.

Effective Written and Verbal Communication Skills

Strong Business Management Skills – Detail Oriented, Organized, Time Management, Priority Setting, etc.

Ability to Work Independently – Bias for Action, High Level of Initiative, etc.

Professional Presentation – Appearance and Speaking

Established track record of accountability, teamwork and delivering results
