Position Purpose

Job purpose of the Operations director is to oversee and direct the function of the company’s Fleet Managers, coordinators and any other staff assistants, and all Drivers; provide assertive day to day leadership, management, and guidance; ensure on-time delivery and that all DOT and safety regulations are followed.



• Develop, train, and monitor the overall job performance of fleet managers.
• Ensure consistent communication and information flow to all staff and to drivers.
• Support the development and cultivation of positive business relationships with the company’s customers.
• Identify service and revenue improvement opportunities and support the management of costs.
• Drive and facilitate activities that improve coordination and communication within the Operations department and other departments throughout the Company (e.g. Load Planning, Recruiting, Customer Service, Sales, HR).
• Oversee and ensure all operations comply with applicable safety, and other regulatory rules and regulations (DOT).
• Monitor attendance of fleet managers and provide coverage in cases of absenteeism.
• Review and take action on all major issues carrying over from previous day.
• Review and take action on overall fleet mileage and revenue from previous day and weeks. 
• Review service failures and counsel fleet managers and drivers on repeated issues that need correcting.
• Review voluntary and involuntary terminations and counsel fleet managers on unacceptable totals and situations that need correcting.
• Responsible for overseeing all driver performance and disciplinary actions.
• Work hand in hand with Night Ops to insure smooth shift changes.
• Monitor open tractor count and inform recruiting of specific needs to fill open equipment. 
• Work with sales to give them knowledge of desire lanes and areas that we are strong in so they can concentrate on soliciting freight that fits our driver base.
• Complete daily, weekly, monthly and periodic reports as required.
• Fully participate in, and require the full participation of, assigned staff in development opportunities to increase skills.
• All other duties as assigned. 



• Bachelor’s degree preferred in Business, Logistics Management, or closely related field; OR 10 years equivalent experience in trucking.
• Minimum of 3 years directly managing drivers is required. Load planning and customer service a plus.
• Must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint; AS400; Outlook, and other email or web-based programs.
• Must have a high level of familiarity with DOT regulations; safety, logs, HOS, and other transportation-industry rules. Must demonstrate proficiency with CS2010.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, verbally, in writing, and electronically.
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Must demonstrate advanced skills in employee coaching and management; conflict resolution and negotiation skills are required.
• Excellent organizational skills; must be detail-oriented and able to manage many tasks simultaneously.
• Must be able to work extra hours if needed, including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
